Summer Pre-Dental Enrichment Program (SPEP)

SPEP Students

Brief Program History

The Summer Pre-Dental Enrichment Program (SPEP) began in 1991 as a summer enrichment program for college students who showed an

interest in pursuing dentistry as a career. From 1991 through 1996, students participated in this program. Baylor College of Dentistry soon realized the need to offer a longer, more intense enrichment program and additional facilitated-entry and retention activities, which would better prepare participants for admission into dental school, as well as increase their likelihood of success once admitted.

What started as a three-week program in 1991 with ten students participating in four courses has grown to its current size, where 25 students participate in eight weeks of enrichment and retention activities, pre-application counseling and post-application advocacy, in addition to the six core courses. 324 students participated in the Summer Pre-Dental Enrichment Program from 1997 to the summer of 2007, for a total of 367 students involved since the beginning of the program.
