Sheryl Hornback - 20 years
Wednesday, November 12, 2003

In 1983, the Fourth of July was truly a day to celebrate for Sheryl Hornback, educational specialist in the student development division of the Office of Student Services. The very next day she was starting a new job at Baylor College of Dentistry.

"A lot has changed since I started working here," said Hornback. "One of the most significant changes I've seen is the role of computers. We've gone from limited word processing to more applications than I could begin to list."

Hired as an instructional designer in what was then the Department of Educational Services, Sheryl had the opportunity to design the Audiovisual Learning Center – the current Computer Laboratory – and catalog the audiovisual programs she had worked with faculty members to create.

"I have stayed at BCD because my job and responsibilities have evolved and changed over the years, and I continue to evolve and grow with them," she said. "Luckily, I seem to adapt well."

Someone is always poking his or her head in Hornback's office with a question, concern or a need for encouraging words. And that's fine with her. Working with students, faculty and staff is what she has enjoyed most about her job, which entails coordinating the peer tutoring program and monitoring the academic progress of dental and dental hygiene students. She also serves as the associate director for the college's Health Careers Opportunity Program grant activities and has been an active member of the Welcoming Diversity Committee and the Institutional Review Board.

Some of Hornback's favorite activities away from BCD are reading, antiquing and swimming. Her husband, Gary, executive clinic administrator in clinical services, has worked at BCD for 10 years. She has two stepsons: Jared, who was married in October, and Josh, who will marry next spring
