Leeanna Bartlett - 20 years
Wednesday, November 12, 2003

Leeanna Bartlett has been connected to Baylor College of Dentistry nearly all of her life. Her dad, Dr. J.B. Hooker, was a 1957 BCD graduate, who practiced dentistry in Terrell, Texas, and served on the faculty for many years. He's the one who told her about a job opening at the college; that was 21 years ago.

Bartlett is not sure what her title was when she was hired; she thinks it was "social worker."  Today, she is director of social services in public health sciences.

"I love my job, both the social and the service aspects of social services, and I believe this is where God wants me," she said. Her primary duties include accepting and tracking patient referrals from public and private agencies, writing the Ryan White Comprehensive AIDS Resources Emergency Act grant application, coordinating the community service requirements for the third- and fourth-year dental students and directing the Community Preceptor Program.

"BCD people are the best, and there is never a dull moment," Bartlett said, when asked what she likes most about her job. "Each day presents new challenges and opportunities, and I am always busy."

With the years at the college have come "many wonderful memories," Bartlett said. "But my two favorites are the day I was told that my dad had been named posthumously to the BCD Hall of Fame and the day a fourth-year dental student asked to marry my daughter."

Bartlett's interests include church, reading, logic puzzles and genealogy. She loves spending time with her family, which includes her husband, three children, four grandchildren as well as her 85-year old mother, who she says is a source of great inspiration and wisdom to her.
