Dr. Thomas W. McKinney - 25 years
Wednesday, November 12, 2003Dr. Thomas W. McKinney (BCD '68), associate professor of restorative sciences, is a 25-year employee of Baylor College of Dentistry. A recipient of the Teacher-of-the-Year Award in 1986, McKinney can't imagine doing anything that would be more interesting and rewarding.
"I enjoy working with students who help to keep me energized and enthusiastic about dentistry and teaching," said McKinney. He works as a course director for the D2 preclinical course in removable prosthodontics and as an instructor in the removable prosthodontics clinic. McKinney is an active instructor in the Dental Simulation Laboratory.
The most significant change he has witnessed since joining BCD is the composition of the student body. "It is much more diversified in all respects than it was in 1978 when I started teaching," said McKinney.
After earning his dental degree from BCD in 1968, McKinney spent the next 10 years practicing general dentistry in Irving, Texas. Having been a science teacher prior to attending dental school, he decided to pursue a teaching career in dentistry and began working in the Department of Removable Prosthodontics in 1978 for the late Dr. Joe Lambert.
Outside of work, McKinney enjoys music, painting, carpentry (remodeling his house), model railroading and computers. He is grateful to his wife: "My wife, Ovella, has given me tremendous support for everything that I have been able to accomplish in my dental career," said McKinney.
