Decker Thomas - 25 years
Wednesday, November 12, 2003

When Decker Thomas, maintenance worker II in facility services, came to work at Baylor College of Dentistry 25 years ago, the college only had four floors and two elevators. It faced Hall Street and there was no parking garage.

A lot has changed since then. The college now has eight floors, five elevators—plus a service elevator. The school now faces Gaston Avenue and has a six-story parking garage. Although the changes have been good, it is not the building facility that keeps Thomas at BCD; it's the family atmosphere.

"The employees at BCD are the greatest," Thomas said.

The building is not the only thing that's changed during Thomas' tenure with the college. His job also is different. Before working in facility services where his duties include driving, access control and sign making, he worked in environmental services as a part of the strip crew.

Thomas said his fondest memory of the college came recently with the tragic loss of his grandson. "The outpouring of love and financial support that the BCD family bestowed on my family in our time of tragedy and grief is a memory that will never fade," Thomas said.

In his leisure time, Thomas enjoys reading, watching movies and spending time with his family, which includes his wife, Charlene; two daughters, Dextria Chenelle and Ranae Clarice; and one son, Richard Clarence.
