Baylor College of Dentistry's nationally syndicated television oral health news report, "Dental Health Check," airs locally each Monday during WFAA-TV's 6 a.m. and noon newscasts. In addition, "Dental Health Check" segments are
now rebroadcast several times a day on the Texas Cable News Network.
"Dental Health Check" is available on BCD's Web site as well. Visit the site for scripts and information about the latest segments. Hosted by Dr. Linda Niessen (BCD), the report's recent topics include:
- "Cracked Tooth Syndrome" featuring Dr. Jeff Roy. Do you have a tooth you tend to avoid when a chewing? You may have a difficult-to-diagnose problem called "cracked tooth syndrome."
- "Dental Access" featuring Dr. Nancy Dickey. To help solve a dentist shortage, Baylor College of Dentistry has launched a new effort to recruit more minority dental students who might practice in rural and other
underserved areas throughout Texas.
- "Early Checkup" featuring Dr. Barry Choate (BCD '84). Many parents wait until a child enters kindergarten or later to get their first dental X-rays and cleaning, but the first dental visit should occur much earlier.
- "Evacuee Dental Care" featuring Dr. Robert Smith. In Dallas alone, dentists have found more than 1500 serious dental cases among the evacuee population. North Texas dentists are volunteering their services to treat these
new patients.
- "Halloween Candy" featuring Dr. Vicki Borowski. During Halloween, children and some adults may consume an unhealthy amount of candy, which can lead to bad news at your next dental visit.
- "Implant Prosthetics" featuring Suzanne Verma (BCD). Dental implant technology restores more than just teeth. It actually helps replace parts of the face.
- "Meth Mouth" featuring Dr. Ashly Cothern
(BCD '03). In the past five years, methamphetamine use in America grew by almost 300 percent. Some health officials believe this is the nation's newest epidemic. Called meth, crystal meth, crank or ice, this highly addictive stimulant destroys both lives and tooth enamel.
- "Pills and Nitrous Gas" featuring Dr. Brock Lynn
(BCD '80). A new therapy using medication and nitrous oxide gas helps dental patients who have a difficult time getting numb, and the combination calms the fears of dental "phobics."
- "Quick Crown" featuring Dr. Janet Gonzalez (BCD '91). Dental decay can require more than a filling. Some large cavities require a crown, and now, a new computer technology shortens the entire procedure to one day.
- "Quicker Healing" featuring Dr. Bob Schow
(BCD). This year more Americans will undergo dental surgery than ever before. That's why some dentists are using a new technique called platelet rich plasma or PRP to shorten the time needed to heal.
- "Whitening Caution" featuring Dr. William Wathen (BCD). When is white too white? Dental professionals caution patients who tend to over-whiten their tooth enamel.
