The
Departments of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Pharmacology were
merged by Baylor College of Dentistry in 1992, resulting in the present
single department. The ready availability of Pharmacology faculty has
resulted in closer coordination and integration of foundational
knowledge and clinical dentistry knowledge and experiences. The
Director of the Pharmacology Division is Dr. Samuel Taylor.
The
curriculum of this division spans years 2 through 4 of dental school
training, both years of dental hygiene training and all years of
clinical graduate training. The curriculum comprises a wide range of
knowledge, including medical drugs and their use, dental drugs and
their use, local anesthesia, various sedation gasses and drugs, pain
and anxiety medications, and others. This approach has been highly
successful and BCD students have consistently scored in the top
quintile of nationwide pharmacology scores in the National Board
Examination of the American Dental Association.
In
addition to teaching the foundational knowledge of pharmacokinetics,
pharmacology, and pharmacotherapeutics, the faculty are extensively
involved in basic research into the actions of various drugs that play
a prominent clinical role or potential clinical role in medical and
dental treatment.
