WHAT DOES an extern do and learn?
OMS externs gain experience in performing dentoalveolar surgery, observing major craniofacial surgery procedures, making
rounds with OMS residents, attending hospital and departmental meetings, standing Emergency Room call with OMS residents. Externs generally acknowledge acquiring considerable knowledge while attending
the various meetings and conferences in both the College and at Baylor University Medical Center.
WHO QUALIFIES to become an extern?
Only clinically qualified 3rd and 4th year dental student applicants from ADA-accredited dental schools are accepted.
Since students are generally not allowed to work on patients until that point in their education, they therefore aren't considered until they have finished their 2nd year, so that they might maximize
their experiences and involvement while on the rotation.
WHEN is the program offered?
Most externs rotate here during the summer months, when their normal academic responsibilities are lightened or suspended for
the summer. We will accept externs at other times, upon request, if we have staffing and facilities to accommodate them.
HOW LONG is the program?
Externs are usually asked to spend a minimum of 4 weeks with us, in order to maximize their experiences and fully participate. Shorter periods are considered upon request, however.
HOW MANY externs are accepted?
We accept a maximum of 3 externs per month during the year, and 5-6 externs during the month of August, when BCD Predoctoral
clinic operations are suspended for about 4 weeks. During the month of August, externs assist BCD volunteer students in managing Emergency Surgery Clinic patients each morning.

About Housing
Housing arrangements are the responsibility of the Extern. We will help as much as possible but on-campus housing cannot be
guaranteed. Discounts are often available from nearby hotels, dorms, or apartment complexes with short-term leasing. Unfortunately, many of those opportunities are away from the campus and require daily
transportation to the college (car or bus).
WHAT do externs have to provide?
Externs are expected to provide their own surgical scrub attire (tops and bottoms) for the entire rotation period and a
clean, white laboratory-style, doctor's coat. Students should also bring OSHA-approved protective eye wear.. The College does not have provided laundry facilities but there are commercial laundries within walking distance of the college.

About the Weather
Summers in Dallas are often very hot, with temperatures frequently over 100 degrees. All of the workings spaces are air
conditioned, however. Winters tend to be relatively mild and only infrequently do temperatures dip below 40 degrees. Snow and ice are possible but unusual and usually short-lived. The College and the
hospital are interconnected, so it is not generally necessary to go outside to move between institutions.
