Stomotology Center at Baylor College of Dentistry, The Texas A&M University System HSC. He was recently elected by his peers as a Director of the American Board of Periodontology. He is a Diplomate of the American Boards of Periodontology and Oral Medicine, a Fellow in the American and International Colleges of Dentists, and a member of numerous other professional organizations. He has presented many lectures or seminars nationally and internationally, is author or co-author of numerous professional papers, has contributed chapters to twenty-four textbooks, and is co-editor of one text.  Dr. Rees established the Stomatology Center at Baylor College of Dentistry in 1984.  It is devoted to the diagnosis and management of unusual diseases of the oral cavity to include lichen planus.

Education/Interdisciplinary Studies from North Carolina State University. Her dissertation topic was "Oral Lichen Planus Commonalities: Educational and Psychological Implications."  After obtaining her doctorate degree, she completed a one-year Postdoctoral Fellowship in The Division of Oral Pathology at The University of North Carolina School of Dentistry. Dr. Burkhart was the coordinator and co-investigator of "The Lichen Planus Study" at The University of North Carolina School of Dentistry from 1995-1997.

Dr. Burkhart is an Adjunct Professor and Educational Consultant in The Department of Periodontics at The Baylor College of Dentistry where she has been a faculty member for since January, 1997. Throughout her appointment, she has been a faculty member and lecturer for The Stomatology Center at Baylor College of Dentistry.  Prior to her appointment at Baylor, she was an Assistant Professor at The University of North Carolina School of Dentistry for nine years teaching in both the dental hygiene and the oral diagnosis department/oral pathology division.  Dr. Burkhart has held appointments at The College of Medicine and Dentistry in Newark, New Jersey and at Wake Technical Community College, Raleigh, North Carolina where she taught Oral Pathology to allied health students.

Dr. Burkhart is active in the following professional organizations: The International Association For Dental Research, The American Association of Dental Research (past Dallas, Texas Chapter Secretary/Treasurer), The Sigma Xi Scientific Research Society, The American Dental Education Association, The Association For Psychological Type, and The American Academy of Oral Medicine.

In addition to the formation of The International Support Group for Oral Lichen Planus, Dr. Burkhart has presented papers on the subject of Oral Lichen Planus and has published articles on the topic in national dental journals. The focus of her work is in the area of oral lichen planus, stress management/life-style interventions and patient management.
