Information Technology Services
The Office of Information Technology at BCD is located in room 529. They support the computing and network needs of the College. Wireless access is available in most areas of the BCD campus for email, Internet, and network access on both laptops and smart phones. Off campus access of network resources is made available through Virtual Private Network (VPN). Unfortunately, OIT personnel are unable to service personally owned computers although they are happy to help you configure your laptops and smart phones so you can access network resources.
General Information and Helpdesk – Call 1-800-799-7472 if you forget your password or experience problems with a computer, printer or network connection. The helpdesk can also be accessed via e-mail at email@example.com. The OIT website is found at http://www.tamhsc.edu/information-technology/.
MyHSC – This web portal contains information of general interest to students including announcements and links to email, Blackboard, Banner and the Texas A&M website for ordering discounted software. Recognized student organizations are invited to request a channel to post information for their members. MyHSC is found at https://my.tamhsc.edu.
Blackboard – This Web-based course-management system is designed to allow students and faculty to participate in classes delivered online or use online materials and activities to complement face-to-face teaching. Blackboard is used by instructors to provide students with course materials, discussion boards, virtual chat, online quizzes, grades, course announcements, and more.
Instructional Computer Laboratory – This 30-workstation facility adjacent to the library is available for all BCD students. It includes PC’s, laser printers, a flatbed scanner and a LCD video projector. The ICL is open the same hours as the library for self-directed learning. It is also used as a computer classroom several hours a week during which times it is not available for general use (these times are clearly posted in the room). Computers within the ICL are fully networked and have Internet access. The HSC maintains institutional licenses for Windows operating system and the Microsoft Office Suite – Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Access which are maintained on these PC’s.
E-mail – All students have a TAMHSC BCD e-mail account to facilitate on-campus communication. The e-mail system used here – MS Exchange/Outlook – facilitates doing local and off-campus e-mail from a single “mailbox”. It can be accessed at https://webmail.tamhsc.edu or from a link within MyHSC.
Databases – Students have easy access to two of the most outstanding health-related databases – Micromedex for drug information and Ovid Medline for searching the Biomedical literature. Please contact the library for help at 8151.
Clinic Management System – Students, faculty and staff use the Axium software system to manage all aspects of patient care – scheduling, charting, accounting, etc. More than 500 PCs and printers are available in the clinics and elsewhere to use this state-of-the-art system.
