This program works collaboratively with dental specialty, advanced education in general dentistry and dental education programs to provide students with financial support in exchange for a commitment to teach upon completion of these programs.
For dental students and dental practitioners interested in an academic career in dentistry.
Program Objectives
The objectives of the Comprehensive Dental Faculty Development Program are to:
- Increase the diversity of students recruited to and entering dental academic careers
- Facilitate advanced training and career development of dental faculty
Eligible Applicants
- 3rd- or 4th-year dental students
- Dental practitioners
Selection Criteria
CDFPD candidates will be selected based upon the following criteria:
- Interest in teaching
- Past academic performance
- Prior investigation productivity or experience
- Letters of recommendation from department chairs or faculty who have previously worked with the applicant
- Appropriate and realistic career goals of the individual
- Motivation and diligence as indicated by prior history and also determined by personal interview
- A minimum commitment to teach one year for each year of financial support provided during the Program
Number of Participants
A maximum of 2 participants will be selected each year.
Program Curriculum
The curriculum for each CDFDP participant will be specifically tailored to meet his/her individual needs and goals. Dental students who enter the CDFDP in their 4th year would earn:
- A D.D.S./D.M.D. degree from their current institution
- A certificate in a dental specialty or advanced general dentistry from TAMHSC-Baylor College of Dentistry, and/or
- A Master of Science degree in Health Professions Education or Oral Biology from TAMHSC-Baylor College of Dentistry
Dental practitioners, who are accepted into CDFDP, will follow a curriculum determined by their training and/or experience.
The post-graduate specialty/advanced general dentistry training will enhance the development of the clinical knowledge and skills necessary for dental academicians. A Master of Science degree in Health Professions Education or specific courses offered through TAMHSC-Baylor College of Dentistry's Health Professions Education Program (HPEP) will provide formal education in the art and science of teaching. Participants will develop foundational knowledge and skills for conducting educational research, develop teaching skills, construct effective learning environments, and become well versed in higher education issues.
Participants will also engage in community based projects/activities such as:

Conducting research related to underserved populations
- Engaging in practice in underserved communities
- Participating in TAMHSC-Baylor College of Dentistry's educational outreach programs by: offering dental health and career awareness activities to elementary school students; working with 7th- through 12th-grade students who come to TAMHSC-Baylor College of Dentistry on field trips; and/or teaching in summer pre-dental enrichment programs for high school, college and post-baccalaureate students
A team of mentors will provide support and guidance to Program fellows. The team will be composed of:
- An education mentor
- A research mentor
- A clinical mentor
- Upon successful completion of the CDFDP, Program fellows will apply for faculty positions at TAMHSC-Baylor College of Dentistry and/or other dental schools.
Application Process
Respective applications must be separately submitted to specialty/advanced training programs and CDFDP.
Participant SupportStipends will be provided to assist students with educational expenses. To be eligible to receive Kellogg/ADEA grant support, participants must increase the diversity of dental faculty and/or meet the criteria defined by the Health Resources and Services Administration/Title VII of the Public Health Service Act.*
Receipt of a stipend through this program is not a guarantee of being offered a faculty position at TAMHSC-Baylor College of Dentistry nor is appointment to a faculty position at TAMHSC-Baylor College of Dentistry an offer of a permanent position.
- * Come from an environment that has inhibited the individual from obtaining the knowledge skills, and abilities required to enroll in and graduate from a health professions or nursing school; or
- Come from a family with an annual income below a level based on low-income thresholds according to family size published by the US Bureau of Census, adjusted annually for changes in the Consumer Price Index, and adjusted by the Secretary for use in health professions and nursing programs. The maximum family income levels are based on 200 percent of the Department’s poverty guidelines.
