Information for Prospective Applicants
Purpose and Program Description
The purpose of the Texas
A&M University Baylor College of Dentistry Prosthodontic residency
program is to provide progressive clinical, laboratory and didactic
training, closely supervised, at the post-graduate level in fixed,
removable, maxillofacial and implant prosthodontics. The interrelation
of other medical/dental clinical specialties is also emphasized.
The
program integrates all facets of the biomedical sciences with a
comprehensive clinical experience culminating in the award of a
certificate in prosthodontics. The program emphasizes the diagnostic
process, and current approaches to instrumentation and occlusion are
stressed. Opportunities for implant placement and restoration of many
implant systems also exist. A Master of Science in Dentistry may also be
concurrently pursued, and Ph.D. opportunities are also available in
many areas of study.
Our program is three years in length and is
accredited by the American Dental Association, Commission on Dental
Accreditation. Successful completion leads to specialty certification
and also qualifies the graduate for examination by the American Board of
Prosthodontics. The flexibility of the program permits the postdoctoral
student to progress optimally, developing and building upon his or her
background. Thus, within the requirements of the program, the schedule
for each student is developed individually to fulfill needs and
objectives. The program goals and objectives are to:
- Produce a graduate who is competent/proficient in all aspects of clinical/laboratory prosthodontics and has the didactical knowledge on which to base treatment.
- Produce a graduate who will have the foundation for scientific inquiry, critical thinking and problem solving.
- Prepare the graduate for successful certification by the American Board of Prosthodontics.
- Prepare and motivate the graduate for a lifetime of scholarly pursuit and active involvement in the specialty and profession.
- Provide a program environment that is patient centered, serves the students, faculty and staff, and contributes to the advancement of knowledge.
Program Requirements
Criteria of resident selection includes: academic record, research and publication records, extracurricular achievement, honors and awards, class standing, professional experience and additional training, references, and the personal interview. The Graduate Record Exam (GRE) and TOEFL scores are required for all international applicants, and National Board scores for US trained applicants. All students are enrolled in the Masters/Certificate program. As a matter of policy, Texas A&M University Baylor College of Dentistry accepts individuals into its postdoctoral programs solely on the basis of merit and does not discriminate due to race, color, creed, handicap, national origin, gender or age.Application to the program is always very competitive and forms are available from Baylor College of Dentistry. Applications can also be made through the Postdoctoral Application Support Service (PASS) of the American Dental Education Association (pass@adea.org). There is no Post Doctoral Matching Program for prosthodontics. A complete application, received by the program deadline, is required for consideration.
Recruiting Schedule
The application deadline is 1 August for the class starting in June of the following year. All applicants must be prepared to appear for a group personal interview in Dallas during September. This occasion has a twofold purpose; faculty members in the program have the opportunity to become better acquainted with the applicant and applicants have the opportunity to become acquainted with various facets of the program to which they are applying. Phone interviews are not acceptable.Infection Control Policy
The infection and disease control policies of Baylor College of Dentistry are in compliance with the American Dental Association, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and Texas State Regulations. For the protection of all our patients, students, and faculty we adhere to infection control procedures know as universal precautions. All dental instruments used for patient care, including handpieces, are heat sterilized after each use.For Additional Information
