The Department of Public Health Sciences at Texas A&M Health Science Center Baylor College of Dentistry focuses on the science and art of preventing and controlling dental diseases and promoting dental health through organized community efforts. Departmental faculty provide instruction in the prevention of oral disease, community-based clinical education, behavioral science, biostatistics, dental public health, geriatric dentistry and biostatistics to dental and dental hygiene students as well as graduate students.
Community-based clinical experience is provided in three extramural clinic settings. Department faculty also contribute significantly to the teaching component of various high school and college enrichment programs at the college. The department offers a residency program in dental public health, tailored to the needs of part-time or off-site students.
Departmental faculty conduct extramurally-funded programs in oral cancer education, tobacco cessation, epidemiology of oral diseases and health-policy research. The department also is responsible for coordination of HSC-BCD community outreach activities.
The department houses the Office of Social Services, which coordinates subsidized care for patients funded by Ryan White grants, Texas Rehabilitation Council and other sources.
