BMS 5221 - RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODOLOGY
An introduction to the research process; sufficient background in research design and methodology is provided to enable students to critically evaluate literature and assist in the formulation of research projects. Also includes discussion of rules and regulations for human and animal research. 2 semester hours
BMS 5222 - APPLIED BIOSTATISTICS
Overview of applied biostatistics with an emphasis on oral health research. Training includes computer based instruction in data analysis using SPSS. 2 semester hours
DH 5100 - ADVANCED DENTAL HYGIENE CLINICAL SKILLS
This course includes self-assessment and development of advanced dental hygiene clinical skills. Contains intramural and extramural rotations to further advance clinical proficiency. 1 semester hour
DH 5112 - INTRODUCTION TO FACULTY RESPONSIBILITIES AND ISSUES IN HIGHER EDUCATION
This course exposes the prospective new faculty member to the functions and responsibilities that help to meet the institution's mission with respect to teaching, service and scholarly activity. 1 semester hour
DH 5130 - CLINICAL DENTAL HYGIENE TEACHING PRACTICUM
This practicum course is designed to provide the graduate students with clinical teaching experience and evaluation of first and/or second year dental hygiene students in the areas of patient assessment, treatment planning, instrumentation, and implementation of comprehensive dental hygiene clinical and educational services, patient management and professionalism. Prerequisite: DH 5201 (may be taken concurrently with DH 5201). 1 semester hour each
DH 5200 - EDUCATIONAL RESEARCH
Students will develop the knowledge and skills necessary to be intelligent consumers and producers of educational research. A focus will be on conducting survey research. 2 semester hours
DH 5201 - TEACHING STRATEGIES: DENTAL HYGIENE EDUCATION I
This course introduces the graduate student to a variety of clinical education philosophies. Cognitive, affective and psychomotor learning theories are addressed and clinical teaching methodologies are emphasized. Evaluation mechanisms for assessing a novice student's progress and development are explored. 2 semester hours
DH 5202 - TEACHING STRATEGIES: DENTAL HYGIENE EDUCATION II
This course will expose the student to a variety of principles and methods that will familiarize the student with the requirements of clinical teaching including: accreditation, scheduling, dispensary management, developing positive staff and faculty interactions and mentoring undergraduate students on projects. 2 semester hours
DH 5208 - HOSPITAL ADMINISTRATION PRACTICUMS I-III
This series of practicums prepares the student for an institutional administrative/management position. Topics include hospital organization and protocol, hospital dentistry organization, healthcare financing and the changing healthcare market, human resource issues, assessment, planning and interventions as they relate to patient care and managing a dental clinic. 5 semester hours
DH 5210 - SPECIAL CARE PATIENT SEMINAR
Contemporary health care issues that affect the medical and dental needs of special care patients will be discussed. Students in the education track will develop a special needs patient course for a fictitious dental hygiene program and include curriculum content, goals and objectives that address patients who are mentally, medically or physically challenged. In addition, students will prepare a lecture on a special needs patient and present it to the undergraduate dental hygiene students. Students in the health administration track will develop a fictitious health care facility or a mobile dental clinic for special needs patients and include targeted population, objectives, policy statements, budget, personnel and equipment. Health administration track students will also present a dental in-service to either the nurses or aids that care for patients with disabilities in a group home or hospital setting. 2 semester hours
DH 5211 - CLINICAL CASE STUDY
This course will help the student develop and apply the knowledge and skills necessary to develop a formal written presentation of a case study. 2 semester hours
DH 5301 - DIDACTIC TEACHING STRATEGIES
This course introduces the graduate student to the processes involved in the development of a course syllabus and a college-level classroom presentation. The student will develop a syllabus for a dental/dental hygiene course and a classroom presentation that will include a lesson plan containing goals, learning objectives, examination items, a test blueprint, outline of material, evaluation mechanism and audiovisual materials. The student will also be introduced to item analyses and test blueprints. Academic integrity and evaluation of teaching performance will also be discussed. 2 semester hours
DH 5314 - CLASSROOM TEACHING PRACTICUM
This course provides the graduate student with additional opportunities to enhance classroom-teaching experiences. The student will work directly with the Course Director to identify a topic of interest and to develop a unit of instruction, which will include goals, learning objectives, lesson plans and examination items. The student will also determine the most appropriate teaching methodologies, audio/visual aids, and evaluation mechanisms. Prerequisite: DH 5301 1 semester hour
DH 5V88 - RESEARCH FOR PRACTICUM PROJECT (Non-thesis option-Administrative Track)
Students will assess the need for, plan, implement and evaluate a major project in their interest area. Literature review. 3 semester hours
DH 5V89 - PRACTICUM PROJECT
Students will prepare a written report of their project and formally present and orally defend this project to the faculty. 3 semester hours
DH 5V98 - RESEARCH FOR THE MASTER'S THESIS
Conduct original research in chosen topic; Literature review, data analysis. 3 semester hours
DH 5V99 - THESIS
Formal presentation of research literature review, objectives, methods, data analysis, results, discussion and conclusions in acceptable written form. Oral defense is also required. 3 semester hours
HPE 5225 - TEACHING SKILLS FOR HEALTH PROFESSIONS EDUCATORS
Overview of teaching principles and methods geared toward the special needs of the health professions educator. 1 semester hour
