Undergraduate dental students at Baylor College of Dentistry (BCD) have several opportunities to participate in research. The BCD chapter of the Student Research Group (SRG) is sponsored by the American Association for Dental Research.
This student-run organization seeks to acquaint dental students with opportunities for participation in research at the College and at the national level and to heighten the profile of research among the entire student population. Several BCD students have served as officers of the national SRG since its inception, including President and Vice-president for 2003-2004.
Participation in the student research program at the College provides undergraduate dental students with hands-on experience in research. Under the mentorship of a faculty member, students can apply to receive funding for supplies and a stipend to support a research project in an area of interest. Students also receive selective credit (Dental and Craniofacial Research selective) for this experience.
Typically these projects utilize the techniques of modern biology or materials science to investigate a clinically-relevant question. Over the past decade, student researchers from Baylor College of Dentistry have competed successfully for national awards such as the Caulk prize and AADR Fellowships at the AADR and IADR meetings.
