Faculty in the Department of Biomedical Sciences at Texas A&M Health Science Center Baylor College of Dentistry provide all the basic science instruction to dental and dental hygiene students, residents in post-graduate dental specialty programs and graduate students enrolled in degree programs in biomedical sciences.
In addition, department faculty contribute significantly to instruction in various high school and college enrichment programs offered by the college for students interested in dentistry. The department offers M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in biomedical sciences.
The department is a major locus for basic science and translational research at HSC-BCD. Biomedical sciences faculty maintain extramurally-funded research programs, mostly in areas relevant to the craniofacial region. Faculty interests run the gamut from phytochemicals and regulation of feeding behavior to the role of dendritic cells in cancer and the genetics of caries-causing bacteria.
An important focus of research is craniofacial biology, with faculty spanning the spectrum from the developmental biology of corneal epithelium, sutures, palate, and temporomandibular joint to the mechanical properties of craniofacial bone and analysis of craniofacial growth in mutant and transgenic animal models.
