Your child’s oral health may be in

                                                          danger this week.

                                                          Halloween arrives in five days.

It’s a scary time for parents and

even scarier for dentists.

So Dr. Linda Niessen has some suggestions to make candy treats

less frightening.

Here is this week’s segment of

Dental Health Check.

KIDS GETTING CANDY                             (VOICE-OVER)

SUPER:   Plano   :02-08                         Not all candy is created equal.

                                                          Some types of sweets help

                                                          dentists stay very busy.

SUPER:   Dr. Bob Hunsucker            (“It’s the sticky, gooey candy that

Dentist          :13-18                             always frightens us the most.  If

someone is going to shop for

                                                          Halloween candy, I would suggest

                                                          pure chocolate candy.”)

KIDS EATING CANDY                             Any candy with caramel, taffy,

                                                          or other sticky qualities can

                                                          adhere to molars.

MORE CANDY                                      Lollipops or candy that stay

in the mouth a long time also

has a higher risk of causing tooth decay.

DR. HUNSUCKER                              (“Because the bacteria will use that

as their food source and secret acid

                                                          which causes cavities.”)

MORE CANDY                                      So what are some good types of candy?

You’ll be happy to hear that chocolate

may actually promote good oral health.

DR. HUNSUCKER                              (“Chocolate also has an anti-bacterial

effect and so that will counteract the

                                                          high sugar content in chocolate.”)

YOUNG KIDS          If you are going to give out candy, chocolate bars or chocolate kisses

may be the best to give out at your

                                                          door.

WOMAN SHOPPING FOR CANDY            Stay away from sticky candy, suckers,

and jaw breakers when you shop

                                                          for Halloween treats.

DR. HUNSUCKER                              (“Because kids can crack teeth and

break teeth on things like Jolly Ranchers

and other hard candy like that.”)

(ON CAMERA)                                  (STAND-UP CLOSE)

SUPER:  Dr. Linda Niessen1:08-1:13  At my front door, I give out sugarless

Baylor College of Dentistry          gum, which is even better than candy.

And to a few special young neighbors,

I give my favorite treat—what else--

                                                          a new toothbrush.
