Researchers are testing the amazing, natural
healing power of the human body.
That healing power can lead to creation of entire
segments of new bone.
And the research proves that a broken bone
can actually grow back stronger.
Dr. Linda Niessen explains how the new
research helps dental patients in today’s
sovt: 1:44 Dental Health Check.

LIMB LENGTHENING (VOICE-OVER)
Almost 100 years ago, Russian doctors first discovered how the body grows new segments of bone. The contraption on this young woman’s leg
actually lengthens and widens her leg bone.
CLOSE-UP OF JAWS IN MODEL And now….orthodontists and oral surgeons
SKULL are adapting these methods to lengthen and widen jaw bones.
SUPER: Dr. Jason Cope (“We take a bone, cut it into two segments,
Orthodontist :21-26 let the segments heal for a period of seven days
and slowly stretch the two bone segments apart
at a rate of about a half a millimeter twice a day.”)

SUPER: Dr. Linda Niessen This new technique has a technical name:
Baylor College of Dentistry distraction osteogenesis. Simply put, the
:34-39 orthodontist and surgeon change the length
of jaw bones by using the body’s natural
healing ability.
SURGERY (VOICE-OVER)
The amazing process begins with surgery.
Doctors first cut the lower jaw. This
simulates a fracture and signals the body to start
making new bone. Next, surgeons implant
brackets with adjustable screws. The screws
are turned, millimeter by millimeter,
to lengthen the jaw bone as the body heals.

MARTIN KENT WALKING 17-year old Martin Kent had a severe under bite.
Doctors corrected it using the distraction
osteogenesis method.
SUPER: Martin Kent 1:18-1:22 (“I think it made an improvement in my
Orthodontic Patient facial structure and looks better.”)
SUPER: Dr. Terry Adams (“The great thing about distraction in case like
Orthodontist 1:26-1:31 Martin’s is this is really a more definitive way
and in a relatively short period of time.”)
ON CAMERA (STAND-UP CLOSE)
If you have problems with your bite because
your lower jaw is too small, look into this new
combined surgical and orthodontic technique.
