T-Rex Mouth

[The College] [The Center]

I am a 25 and started orthodontic treatment several months ago.  I have a 6 mm overjet and my orthodontist wanted me to wear headgear to move my teeth back before he puts braces on.  I wore the headgear for several months and nothing moved.  Now he wants to put something called a T-rex which supposedly does the same thing.  I am trying to find some information on this appliance - no one seems to have heard of it.  All I know is that it is like a retainer that is glued to the top of my mouth and attached to my last two teeth on each side.  It works on springs to pull the teeth back.  Does this appliance work better than headgear?  What other options are there aside from pulling teeth.

If I have to, I would be willing to pull teeth but I would rather exhaust all other avenues first.  Is adult orthodontic treatment really more difficult than for children?  I am willing to do whatever it takes, but I just want to make sure I have all the correct information. Any help you could give would be appreciated. Thank you .

There are a variety of treatment options to move molar teeth in a backward direction. While I am not familiar with the particular device you described as a  ``T-Rex," it seems to have the same characteristics as other appliances used for this purpose. Any appliance that can apply appropriate force systems to move teeth should be effective including headgear.

It is difficult to give other options for treatment without knowing the  exact nature of the problem --  i.e. skeletal or dental; protrusive maxilla or retrusive mandible ; both; etc. The appropriate treatment is dependent on  an accurate diagnosis. There is no question that adult orthodontics is more difficult,  but it  has proven to be effective.

I would recommend that you seek a second opinion from a trained orthodontist if you have concerns about the current therapeutic approach to your treatment.
