Speech Surgery

My 3 1/2 year old son is scheduled to have a lingual frenectomy which will be performed by an oral surgeon D.D.S. M.D.

What are the complications of this surgery and recovery time? We have heard many differing opinions.  We are aware that it will be performed under general anesthesia. However, will the surgery improve his speech? Will it aid in the development of his jaw and arc, as was told to me by my dentist. Any information you can provide about the procedure, recovery time, etc. would be useful. Thank you.

Attachment of the tongue to the posterior surface of the mandibular alveolar ridge can affect speech, especially in the very young.  The procedure is generally one in which recovery is very quick, again, especially in the younger patients.  Further discussion regarding recovery should be discussed with the surgeon performing the surgery.  He is the one who knows the type of procedure being planned and the kind of post-operative care which will be required.
