Presentation: Ann McCann presented "Assessment in the Health Disciplines" to doctoral students at Indiana University-Purdue University in Indianapolis, Ind., on May 26. The presentation was part of a course titled "Assessing the Effectiveness of Courses, Programs and Institutions," directed by Dr. Trudy Banta, vice chancellor for planning and institutional improvement. McCann spent the day with Banta and her staff, reviewing the various planning and assessment programs in place on the IUPUI campus.

Biomedical Sciences

Presentation: Dr. Allen Honeyman made a poster presentation titled "Interruption of the bg1P Gene Induces Beta-Glucoside Transport via a Second PTS System in Streptococcus Mutans" at the American Society for Microbiology's 105th general meeting in Atlanta on June 5-9.

Other News: Dr. Mahyar Nouri-Shirazi attended the American Transplant Congress on May 21-25 in Seattle, Wash. It was the the sixth annual joint meeting of the American Society of Transplant Surgeons and the American Society of Transplantation.

A meeting of the Internal Advisory Committee for the Research Infrastructure Enhancement Grant was held at the Institute of Biosciences and Technology in Houston on June 10. The meeting's purposes were to assess progress in developing collaborations between Baylor College of Dentistry and IBT scientists and to discuss the status of the recruitment of the magnet investigator/biomedical sciences chair.

It was attended by Drs.Larry Bellinger, Peter Buschang, Paul Dechow, Jenny He, Allen Honeyman, Robert J. Hinton, Phillip Kramer, Lynne Opperman and Kathy Svoboda as well as graduate student Anneta Bitouni, all of Baylor College of Dentistry. Also attending were Dr. David Carlson of The Texas A&M University System Health Science Center as well as Drs. Brad Amendt, Jonathan Elliston, Richard Finnell, Magnus Hook, James Martin, Wallace McKeehan, Stephen Safe and Robert Schwartz, all of IBT. 

Clinical Affairs

The department welcomes Shirley Grimsley, BCD's new patient advocate. She has more than seven years of experience in the medical and dental fields.

Public Health Sciences

Presentation: Aaron Blackwelder presented his summer research project titled "Attitudes of Texas Dentists to the Texas Dental Medicaid Program" at the National Oral Health Conference/American Association of Public Health meeting in Pittsburgh on May 4. His mentor is Dr. Jay Shulman.

Restorative Sciences

Presentation: Dr. Stan Cobb made two presentations at the Christian Medical and Dental Association's national convention on June 10-11 in Denver. He taught a workshop titled "The Impact of 'Extreme Makeover' on the Ethics of Dentistry." He presented "Taking the Road Less Traveled" to the general assembly.

On April 4, Cobb presented "Beyond Terri Schaivo" as the second of a two-part series on medical ethics at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas. Dr. Steven Lilly, chair of the Ethics Committee at the VA Hospital in Dallas, presented the first half titled "Terri Schaivo and Medical Ethics."

Cobb serves as medical director of the Christian Medical and Dental Association-Dallas. He and Lilly have worked together on several projects.
