Baylor College of Dentistry's nationally syndicated television oral health news report, "Dental Health Check," airs locally each Monday during WFAA-TV's 6 a.m. and noon newscasts. In addition, "Dental Health Check" segments are now rebroadcast several times a day on the Texas Cable News Network.

"Dental Health Check" is available on BCD's Web site as well. Visit the site for scripts and information about the latest segments. Hosted by Dr. Linda Niessen (BCD), the report's recent topics include:

• "Adult Fluoride" featuring Dr. Sergio Navarro (BCD '90). Certain health habits raise your risk of developing tooth decay as an adult. One of those habits is working out and drinking lots of bottled water.
• "Breast-feeding and Cavities" featuring Dr. Robert Morgan. Breast-feeding provides the best nutrition for infants, but does it prevent tooth decay in toddlers?
• "Canker Sores" featuring Dr. John Wright (BCD). One in every five Americans suffers from canker sores, or mouth ulcers. New medication relieves pain and speeds the healing process.
• "First Oral Exam" featuring Morgan. Both pediatricians and dentists finally agree on when young children need their very first dental exam. Recently, the American Academy of Pediatrics adopted the guidelines of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentists.
• "Paint vs. Strips" featuring Dr. Chuck Wakefield (BCD). Many people associate a white smile with good health. That's one reason why teeth-bleaching products sold in drug and grocery stores are hot items.
• "Sweet Tooth Gene" featuring Dr. Pascal Mbiene (BCD). Can you really have a "sweet tooth?" In lab experiments, dental researchers have discovered a gene that makes some mice show a preference for sweet-tasting foods.
