Student Volunteers

BCD students volunteer to care for patients

These BCD dental students gave up some of their summer break when they volunteered to treat patients who needed immediate care.

Baylor College of Dentistry students may have a brief summer break, but for some patients, dental care can't wait for BCD students to return to campus. Fortunately for patients, several D3 and D4 students volunteered to meet patient needs during the summer break.

"The students treated emergency patients who were in severe pain or had infections that could not wait for the reopening of the college before they got treatment," said Dr. Roger Alexander, professor of oral and maxillofacial surgery/pharmacology.

The students were supervised by OMS/P faculty. D3 students were selected on a competitive basis during their first OMS/P academic course at the end of the spring semester of their D2 year. D4 students are chosen from student volunteers as well as dental students involved in month-long externships in the OMS graduate clinic.

D3 students included Ibraheem Ackall, Steven Alaniz, Daniel Cook, David Coon, Alison Damarodas, Michael Ding, Andrew Hodges, Michael Mooney, Carly Moore, Jill Sentlinger and Lara Thurman. D4 students were David Ciesla, Laurie Parks, Hemu Patel, Sam Preece, Kirstin Ramsay and Ashly Stone.

Student volunteers were treated to an appreciation cookout by the OMS/P department at Alexander's home Aug. 6.
