Baylor College of Dentistry's Department of Periodontics hosted two annual events in August.

The International Periodontics Symposium was held Aug. 1. Dr. Francisco Rivera-Hidalgo, associate professor and director of research in periodontics, organized the event with the assistance of Carol Libby, administrative assistant I in periodontics.

In addition to BCD's program, graduate programs in periodontics represented at the symposium included the Universidad Autonoma de Nuevo Leon in Monterrey, Mexico; Universidad de Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico; Universidad de Panama, Ciudad de Panama, Panama; and Universidad Quetzalcoatl in Irapuato, Guanajuato, Mexico. A ceremony included the signing of extensions of academic affiliation agreements between BCD and the University of Quetzalcoatl. A total of 67 residents and faculty participated in the program.

Rivera-Hidalgo received a letter of appreciation from the Guadalajara Graduate Periodontics Department, Clinics Division of the Universidad de Guadalajara for facilitating the participation of these universities and for organizing the symposium. Dr. William W. Hallmon, professor and chair of periodontics, received honors and recognition for his contribution to the academic exchange program between BCD and the Universidad Autonoma de Nuevo Leon and for his academic support of the Universidad de Guadalajara.

On Aug. 2-3, the department hosted the 31st Arthur Merritt Memorial Lectureship featuring keynote speaker Dr. Maurizio S. Tonetti. A reception in his honor was held Aug. 2 at the Dallas Petroleum Club. The lecture was presented Aug. 3 in Baylor University Medical Center's Beasley Auditorium.

Tonetti is professor and head of the Department of Periodontology and director of the graduate program in periodontology at Eastman Dental Institute and Hospital in London.
