Grant awarded to BCD faculty members
Editor's Note: Grants are published once official notification is received by Baylor College of Dentistry's Office of Research and Advanced Education.
Dr. Ernie Brooks (BCD '94, '96), director of student development and assistant professor of restorative sciences, received a Health Careers Opportunity Program grant for
$1,479,709 from the Bureau of Health Professions, Health Resources and Services Administration. Funded from Sept. 1, 2002, to Aug. 31, 2005, the grant supports "Bridge to Dentistry: Awareness to
Graduation."
The grant is a continuation from the first HCOP grant awarded for the same project. That initial grant provided $987,616 during its three-year period.
"Bridge to Dentistry" encompasses BCD's outreach and educational programs leading to careers in dentistry through awareness, attraction, preliminary education, facilitated entry, admission,
retention and graduation. Programs include Project Dental Awareness, Summer Teen Academic Readiness Program, Summer Academic Enrichment Program, Saturday Academies, Summer Predental Enrichment Program,
Post-Baccalaureate Program, and several retention programs.
Dr. K. Vendrell Rankin
(BCD '77), associate professor of public health sciences, has received several grants recently. The Texas Cancer Council awarded $209,000 for "Dental Oncology Education Program." The program's mission is to maximize the dental professional's role in risk reduction, early diagnosis and management of cancer therapy-related oral complications; and to enhance the contribution of all health professionals in this area.
Rankin received numerous grants for DOEP's "Oral Health in Cancer Therapy Conference 2003," scheduled for Feb. 27-March 1 in Dallas. The funding agencies and amounts are:
- American Cancer Society, Texas Division – $3,000;
- Academy of General Dentistry Foundation – $15,000;
- Daiichi Pharmaceuticals – $5,000;
- Pfizer Pharmaceuticals – $5,000; and
- Texas Dental Foundation – $5,000.
Rankin also received a grant subcontract for $60,000. The Health Resources and Services Administration awarded the original grant to Parkland Health and Hospital System for "Texas and Oklahoma AIDS
Education Training Center." Rankin's subcontract funds continuing education on recognition and appropriate management of HIV/AIDS patients' oral manifestations and complications.
