BCD mourns loss of Dolores Peeler

The Baylor College of Dentistry family is mourning the loss of Dolores Peeler, who died Aug. 23 after a courageous, yearlong battle with cancer. Peeler had been a BCD employee for 14 years, serving since 1992 as assistant to Dr. Mohsen Taleghani, professor and chair of general dentistry.

Known throughout the building for her warm, caring and vivacious personality, Peeler left those who knew her with fond memories and compelling stories that they shared as news of her death spread. She was known for sharing words and notes of encouragement with fellow workers

who were going through a hard time or just for no particular reason. Many people recalled incidents when she had gone the extra mile to help them over one of life's hurdles. Christmas was her favorite time of year, and she always made her way through every BCD department passing out Christmas treats. Last Christmas she didn't let her energy-depleting chemotherapy stand in the way of the tradition. Although she was too weak to make the rounds herself, she provided the treats and asked members of the general dentistry staff and faculty to deliver them for her.

To those who knew her, it wasn't surprising that she loved Christmas. Her love of Jesus was the dynamic that fueled her life, and she never tired of telling people about His love.

While undergoing chemotherapy, Peeler was honored as Staff Employee of the Quarter for the fourth quarter of 2001 and came to the college to receive the award before a large group of well-wishers. In the "BCD Employee Profile" printed in the July Baylor Dental Record Online, she summed up her life philosophy: "Stand in awe of God and do the best I can."
