BCD garners awards

Editor's Note: Baylor College of Dentistry faculty, staff and students receive kudos from a variety of sources. Recent awards are listed here.

Dr. Ernie Brooks (BCD '94, '96), director of student development and assistant professor of restorative sciences, received the 2002 NDAF/Colgate-Palmolive Faculty Recognition Award in the teaching category. Bestowed by the National Dental Association Committee on Dental Education, Research and Professional Advancement and the American Dental Education Association, the award highlights the achievements of minority faculty who have demonstrated excellence in professional development in the areas of teaching,

research or administration/service. Brooks received a $750 award and commemorative plaque.


Dr. Tyler Ferris (BCD '02-Ortho) won the prestigious Earl E. and Wilma S. Shepard Award of Distinction from the American Board of Orthodontics. The award is presented to the person who attains the highest score in the nation on the board's Phase II examination, which is taken by more than 300 graduate students and practitioners each year. This marks the second year in a row that a BCD orthodontics resident received the award. Ferris graduated from the BCD graduate orthodontics program in August.


Dr. Tommy Gage

Dr. Tommy Gage (BCD '61, '69), who recently retired as director of curriculum and professor of oral and maxillofacial surgery/pharmacology, was named Dentist of the Year 2002 by the Dallas County Dental Society.

Dr. Paul Taylor (BCD '44), professor emeritus of pediatric dentistry, received the society's Lifetime Achievement Award. Both awards were presented May 16.

Dr. Cindy Hsu, first-year resident in periodontics, received one of five American Academy of Periodontology student scholarships presented by the AAP Foundation. The $5,000 award is designed to recognize and reward individuals with outstanding academic backgrounds, career goals in periodontics and a passion for the specialty.


Dr. N. Sue Seale (BCD '70, '72, '79), Regents professor and chair of pediatric dentistry, received the Merle C. Hunter Leadership Award from the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry May 26. A commemorative plaque citing Seale's "exemplary service in the volunteer leadership of the AAPD" over the past year was presented to Seale.


Dr. Claude Williams, director of community outreach services in communications and development, received three awards during the National Dental Association's annual meeting in July. His leadership, support, committment and achievements were lauded through the organization's Presidential Citation Award, Presidential Personal Award and the Civil Rights Award.


James VandeBerg (D2) won first place in the Caulk Dentsply competition (basic science division) at the International Association for Dental Research meeting last March. His presentation, "Craniofacial Growth in Growth Hormone-deficient Rats," was based on research performed during a summer research fellowship. His research was supported by a National Institutes of Health short-term training grant and by funding from the American Association of Orthodontists Foundation to Dr. Robert Hinton, associate professor of biomedical sciences and VandeBerg's mentor. He received $600 and a plaque.

BCD's Student Research Group won two membership awards during a recent American Association for Dental Research meeting. Competing against student research groups nationwide, BCD took top honors for the most new student members and the highest percentage of new student members. The prize for each award was $200 ($400 total). Dr. Robert Spears (BCD '02), assistant professor of biomedical sciences, is the group's faculty adviser.
