A Tradition of Excellence Since 1905

BCD homecoming has something for everyone

BCD alumni enjoy "An Evening in Paris" during Homecoming Weekend 2001. The 2002 event, "Those Were the Days," promises to be just as much fun.

"Those Were the Days" is the theme of Baylor College of Dentistry's Homecoming Weekend Sept. 20-21 in Dallas. The BCD Alumni Association has arranged an array of events that are sure to appeal to all alumni.

The weekend kicks off with continuing education courses on Sept. 20. Dr. Charles Wakefield, director of BCD's Advanced Education in General Dentistry program, will present "Update on Current Restorative Materials," including the rationale behind the most appropriate clinical uses of these materials. Wakefield will discuss selection of adhesive systems; current applications of hybrid/microfill composites; glass ionomers; direct pulp capping; and esthetic alternatives to indirect composite or indirect porcelain inlay/onlay/crowns and their clinical techniques. The application of color in dentistry, principles of smile design and clinical restoration of cosmetic cases for the general dentist will be discussed in detail.

Dr. K. Vendrell Rankin (BCD '77), associate professor of public health sciences, will present the first of two sessions geared primarily toward dental hygienists. "Diagnosis Tricks and Cancer Sticks – The Clinical Practice of Oral Cancer Detection and Nicotine Cessation" will review risk factor reduction and clinical presentation of oral cancer. It also will include a discussion of recent advances in the technology of early detection. Rankin will discuss how dental health professionals can understand tobacco addiction and how to use brief behavioral intervention and pharmacotherapy to assist in nicotine cessation.

Dr. Harvey Kessler, associate professor of diagnostic sciences, will present the second half of the day on "Learning the ABBC's of Clinical Differential Diagnosis." Using a process that is as simple as ABC, except there are two Bs, Kessler will show how clinical abnormalities can be classified into manageable groups that aid the clinical evaluation of soft tissue lesions of the oral cavity. Kessler will discuss how to apply the process to specific, commonly encountered clinical situations.

The registration fee for the CE courses includes continental breakfast, lunch, and a tour of BCD.

A new addition to the Homecoming Weekend lineup is the Women's Health Seminar.  The seminar for female spouses and alumni will focus on the many issues affecting women's health, including the effects of oral health on women's overall health. Dr. Jacqueline Plemons (BCD '86 & '88), clinical associate professor of periodontics and assistant director of the Stomatology Clinic, and Dr. Audrey Graham of Women to Women Health Associates in Dallas, will present the seminar.

What's a Homecoming Weekend without a tour of the ol' stompin' grounds? Alumni participating in the CE courses and the women's seminar will join BCD administrators on a tour of the college campus.

The Classes of 1962, 1967, 1972, 1977, 1982, 1987, 1992 and 1997 will gather at The Stoneleigh Hotel on the evening of Sept. 20 for reunion receptions. The Alumni Association has nearly taken over the hotel for the evening; all of the event rooms have been reserved so the reunion classes can reminisce while enjoying the hotel's sumptuous food.

On Sept. 21, alumni, family members and friends of BCD are invited to a gathering at The Science Place at Fair Park. The Alumni Association has reserved group tickets for the hands-on exhibits and Imax Theatre. At "Noon by the Lagoon," alumni will enjoy a picnic lunch at the Fair Park lagoon.

The weekend's events culminate Saturday evening at "Those Were the Days – Homecoming Weekend 2002 Gala Honoring Mrs. Betty J. Scott." This annual dinner and dance will once again be held at the Fairmont Hotel. The band, "Signed Sealed Delivered," will provide music for dancing throughout the event. All alumni, friends of BCD, faculty and staff are invited. Scott, former registrar at BCD, will be the guest of honor as the Alumni Association kicks off the Betty J. Scott Scholarship Fund Campaign.
