Race for the Cure

TAWD members race for the cure

The Baylor College of Dentistry chapter of the Texas Association of Women Dentists has formed a team to participate in the 20th annual Komen Dallas Race for the Cure Oct. 19. Sponsored by the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, the Dallas race is part of the largest series of 5K runs/fitness walks in the world.

In 2002, races will be held in more than 100 U.S. cities and three foreign countries with more than 1.3 million participants projected. The Dallas race expects more than 40,000 participants. Seventy-five percent of the net proceeds will fund local Dallas-area breast cancer education, screening and treatment projects for medically underserved women. The remaining 25 percent will support the national foundation's award and research grant program, which provides funding for groundbreaking breast cancer research and innovative projects in the areas of breast health education and breast cancer screening and treatment.

Crest is sponsoring BCD's TAWD team. "Crest has generously agreed to donate our registration fees, which will allow more of us to participate," said Megan McKenry (D2), community service director of the chapter. "As future women dentists, we wanted to compete as a team to show our support for this cause."

BCD team members include first- through fourth-year dental students. D4 participants are Shannon Coyle and Natalee Noble. D3 students are: Jamilyn Aubel; Brandy Burnett and her husband, Jeff; Ann Haggard; Melisa Harnden; Anne Hempstead; Tanya Pierce; and Jill Sentlingar. D2 students are Shalisa Duhon Garner, Julia Hawthorne, Gwin Huey, Sarah Kong, Joanne Lewis, Karina Marr, Lynette Ogletree and Kacey Russell. Michelle Carter (D1) also is a team member. Dr. Loulou Moore (BCD'93,'94), assistant professor of restorative sciences, is the chapter's faculty adviser.

TAWD is 45-members strong at the college. "The chapter is off to an exciting and busy year full of fun and productive activities," said Aubel, chapter secretary and team member. "Race for the Cure gives us the opportunity to join women from all over to promote efforts in finding a cure for breast cancer while educating people about proper dental care."
