The educational grant was awarded to the American Dental Association to develop a continuing education program for dentists across the United States. The program will hone practitioners' skills in early oral cancer detection and patient risk assessment as well as intervention through tobacco cessation.

As collaborator, Rankin will receive $13,100 per year for five years ($65,500 total) for her part of the research titled "Tobacco Cessation." She will develop the tobacco cessation portion of the standardized curriculum for dental continuing education.
