Ask Dr. Charles Berry (BCD '73) what he has
enjoyed most about his 30-year career at Baylor College of Dentistry and the answer won't be the increased paperwork and necessity for approvals arising from the college's affiliation with The Texas
A&M University System Health Science Center. Rather, the answer is the same today as it was when he started as an assistant professor on July 2, 1973: teaching.
"I love to stand in front of a class and deliver a lecture that the students 'get,'" said Berry, associate dean for academic services and professor of biomedical sciences. "I know what it feels like to leave a lecture
physically exhausted and mentally exhilarated – it is the absolute best!"
In fact, Berry's favorite memory is being named the 1991 Teacher of the Year. "I remember the exact moment I was told," he said. "To receive that kind of recognition and acceptance from the students – well,
it was overwhelming."
Berry brings his same unbridled enthusiasm to his administrative responsibilities as well. As associate dean for academic services, he oversees curriculum, faculty and academic due-process of students. "I like
achieving conflict resolution in a way that helps BCD maintain its success," he said. "I love working with the person to define the issue and work out a solution."
Although Berry values his career, he is quick to put it in perspective. "I am able to enjoy my work, profession and relationship with BCD because of the support I have personally," he said. "My priority is
my relationship with my Savior Jesus Christ and my family. I appreciate the patience and agape love my wife, Sandra, and daughters, Jessica and Amanda, show me on a daily basis."
Berry enjoys horticulture in his leisure time as well as traveling to Colorado and Florida for backpack hiking and camping. He also "dabbles a bit" in woodworking and coin collecting.
