Biomaterials Science

Presentation: Dr. William A. Brantley presented "Laser Deposition of Ti-6Al-4V Alloy: Microstructural Analysis" at Baylor College of Dentistry Oct. 7. While here, he conferred with Okabe and Dr. John Cai on research projects on titanium casting and titanium-ceramic systems.

Brantley is professor and director of the graduate program in dental materials in the Section of Restorative Dentistry, Prosthodontics and Endodontics at Ohio State University College of Dentistry. He was Cai's mentor during his graduate studies at the university.

Other News: Dr. Toru Okabe participated in the meeting of the International Standards Organization in Vienna, Austria, Sept. 21-29. He serves as a U.S. delegate (expert) on the committees dealing with dental amalgam and mercury issues.

Presentation: Dr. Lynne Opperman and Joseph Rawlins (D2) presented a poster titled "Tgf-ß2 Regulates Fgf2 Signaling and Activity" during the 24th annual meeting of the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research Sept. 20-24 in San Antonio.

Clinical Services

Presentation: Dr. Thomas K. Hasegawa Jr. was the invited speaker for the Richardson Rotary International luncheon Oct. 11. His topic was "Dental Education and Dental Ethics Education."

Other News: Hasegawa attended the American Dental Education Association's annual business finance and clinical administration meeting Oct. 16-19 in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

Diagnostic Sciences

Presentations: Dr. Byron W. Benson presented a continuing education program at the Centennial Celebration Dental Conference in Colorado Springs, Colo., Aug. 31. The title was "Digital Radiography: Fact and Fiction ... Are You Ready for It and Is It Ready for You?" The Colorado Springs Dental Society and Dentsply International sponsored the conference.

Benson presented another CE program, "Current Radiology in the Dental Office," during the Naval Reserve Dental Seminar Sept. 22 at the National Naval Dental Center in Bethesda, Md. The Naval Reserve Readiness Command Mid-Atlantic sponsored the seminar.

Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery/Pharmacology

Presentations: Several department members attended or made presentations during the 84th annual meeting of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons Oct. 2-5 in Chicago. Restorative Sciences

Presentation: Dr. Stan Cobb and Dr. John Patrick addressed the staff and residents at Children's Medical Center of Dallas Oct. 9. Patrick also spoke to the BCD student chapter of the Christian Medical and Dental Associations. Considered an expert on bioethics, Patrick presented "What Hippocrates Remembered That We Have Forgot."

Patrick has published more than 80 papers on the topic of malnourished children. He took early retirement from the University of Ottawa in Canada and now serves as professor of history, medicine and faith at Augustine College. He trained at Kings College in London and has degrees in biochemistry, medicine, nutritional biology and pediatrics.
