BCD students make presentations, participate in health fairs

Third-year dental students at Baylor College of Dentistry made Tooth Talk presentations to students at two private and two public elementary schools in Dallas, Grapevine and Mesquite. Dental students also worked with middle school and high school visitors to BCD during four Project Dental Awareness programs.

Dental and dental hygiene students provided dental exams, oral cancer screenings, and dental health education at 21 health fairs in Dallas, Farmers Branch, Garland, Grapevine, Grand Prairie, Irving, Mesquite, Richardson and Terrell. Dental screenings were provided for the student body at a middle school in Carrollton. Dental sealants were placed on the teeth of nearly 100 children at a public health clinic in West Dallas.

Supervising dentists for these events included: Drs. Neelu Gupta and Betty Wong, advanced education in general dentistry residents; Dr. Danette McNew (BCD '88), assistant professor of general dentistry; Dr. Torsten Steinig, graduate endodontics resident; Dr. Lavern Holyfield (BCD '77), assistant professor of public health sciences; Dr. T.C. Lyon, professor emeritus of public health sciences; and Dr. John Nelson, retired associate dean for clinical services and professor emeritus of diagnostic sciences.
