Hometown: Borger, Texas
Place I'd like to live/retire: North Shore, Oahu
Role models: Pastor Morris Sheets of Hillcrest Church preaches what he lives. Dr. Amp Miller leads by example (and he can outrun me).
Personal motto: Whatever it takes!
Best thing about my job or BCD: I enjoy interacting with students and faculty, especially thinking through complex treatment modalities.
Career highlight: A four-year tour in Germany as Army Dental Clinic chief in Frankfurt and as a prosthodontic consultant for dental activities in northern Germany. During this time, I
also achieved board certification in prosthodontics.
If I wasn't at BCD, I'd: have just completed 30 years with the U.S. Army Dental Corps with mandatory retirement, and I'd be looking for a job.
Life philosophy: Since it is true that "he that is faithful in little will be faithful in much," then it's OK to sweat the small stuff.
Pet peeves: People who try to drive with cell phones stuck in their ears and people who run red lights. Yes, I have been known to do both.
Favorite vacation destination:
Just about anyplace with an ocean view and accessible shoreline. Something about the sea and sea air stirs all my senses and restores my physical and emotional well-being.
Dream car: Original '56 Thunderbird
Favorite hobby:
Traveling. Because of my experiences moving and traveling in the military, I have learned to enjoy the variety of cultures, lifestyles and geographic climates all over the world. Perhaps the main reason is to take respite from the heat and/or pollution and traffic of DFW.
Word that best describes me: Unpredictable
Something you might not know about me: I love music, sing in the church choir and used to play in a rock band in college.
Top three passions: Serving God, enjoying my family, practicing and teaching ethical dentistry.
What my colleagues say about me: "I would charge a forest fire with a squirt gun if Dean Hudson told me to do it. I trust him that much," said Dr. Stanton Cobb (BCD '83),
assistant professor of restorative sciences. "He is a great leader, so it makes it easy to follow him.
"He cares deeply about the students and their problems," Cobb continued. "He and his wife have generously helped struggling students financially, usually without them even knowing. Of course,
now I'm in trouble for saying that, but he's a faculty member who genuinely cares about the students – and that does it for me!"
Dr. Thomas K. Hasegawa Jr.,
associate dean for clinical services, agrees. "Dr. Hudson has a great sense of humor and compassion," he said. "He is a role model of professionalism for our students and faculty."
Dr. Steve Karbowski,
assistant professor of restorative sciences, has known Hudson since both were freshmen dental students at the University of Texas at Houston Dental Branch in 1968. "One of the things I enjoy about Dean is his wry sense of humor. You can count on him to toss a good one-liner into almost any conversation," he said.
"I admire Dean's commitment to his faith in Jesus Christ and his devotion to his family," Karbowski continued. "Although he modestly denies it, he has natural leadership abilities that have
served him well in his military career and in his many positions of responsibility at BCD."
