BCD athletes compete in triathlon

Three BCD athletes took second place in the relay competition of the second annual American Association of Retired Persons Triathlon in Irving, Texas, Oct. 3. Team members included Peter Coorlas, an orthodontics patient at BCD; Dr. Steve Crane (BCD '73), clinical assistant professor of public health sciences; and Dr. Mike McWatters, clinical assistant professor of restorative sciences.

Coorlas competed in the swim portion of the triathlon, Crane competed in the cycling and McWatters competed in the running. They hoped to repeat their first-place award from last year's competition.

"This year's triathlon attracted nearly double the participants, and competition was much stronger," Crane said. "The training was hard but rewarding, and the competition was fun."

Fraternity honors BCD chapter, historian

Baylor College of Dentistry's Lambda Lambda Chapter of Delta Sigma Delta International Dental Fraternity has done it again. For the 10^th year in a row, the college chapter received first place in the annual Chapter Awards Contest from the Supreme Chapter, which governs the whole fraternity internationally.

"The award recognizes Lambda Lambda's participation in national, regional and local activities," said Dr. Miro Pavelka (BCD '77, '81), clinical associate professor of oral and maxillofacial surgery/pharmacology and the chapter's faculty adviser. "It also signifies that this chapter is one of the best in the nation with respect to promoting the goals and ideals of this international fraternity."

In addition, Jackie Vo (D4) received DSD's prestigious Kermit F. Knudtzon DESMOS Award. This is the first time a BCD student achieved the award, which is presented in memory of Knudtzon for his service as the organization's historian and editor of DESMOS, the fraternity magazine. According to Pavelka, Vo distinguished herself as historian of the Lambda Lambda Chapter by consistently contributing articles to the magazine that were of excellent quality and interest.

"I appreciate the award because it was so unexpected," Vo said. "I enjoy working with Lambda Lambda members; it's nice to be recognized for something that means so much to me."

The awards were announced during DSD's annual meeting Oct. 19 in New Orleans.

Grogan achieves ACD fellowship

Dr. David Grogan (BCD '81, '86), assistant professor of oral and maxillofacial surgery/pharmacology, was inducted as a fellow of the American College of Dentists during the organization's 82^nd annual meeting Oct. 18 in New Orleans. Founded in 1920, ACD recognizes dentists who have made significant contributions to the advancement of dentistry and promotes excellence, ethics and professionalism in dentistry. Awarded by invitation only, ACD fellowship is based on demonstrated leadership and contributions to the dental profession and society.

ICD names four BCD fellows

The International College of Dentists inducted four BCD faculty members into its ranks as fellows during the organization's annual meeting Oct. 18 in New Orleans. An honorary organization for the recognition of outstanding and meritorious service to the profession, ICD presented the fellowships for "conspicuous service rendered in the art and science of dentistry" to: Dr. Jeff Genecov (BCD '85, '88), adjunct clinical assistant professor of orthodontics; Dr. Stephen Parel, professor of oral and maxillofacial surgery/pharmacology and director of BCD's Center for Maxillofacial Prosthodontics; Dr. Miro Pavelka (BCD '77, '81), clinical associate professor of OMS/P; and Dr. John Wright, professor and director of pathology in diagnostic sciences.

Resident receives scientific award

Dr. Reena M. Talwar, a resident in oral and maxillofacial surgery/pharmacology, received one of only two scientific awards for her poster presentation titled "Gene Atlas^TM Array Technology Used to Elucidate Effects of Estrogen on Chondrocytes." The award was presented during the 84^th annual meeting of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons in Chicago Oct. 2-5. It is Talwar's third consecutive award for scientific merit. The second poster presentation award went to Dr. Carina Schwartz-Dabney (BCD '93, '00) for "Edentulation Alters Material Properties of Cortical Bone in the Human Mandible."
