On Air
Baylor College of Dentistry's nationally syndicated television oral health news report, "Dental Health Check," airs locally each Monday during WFAA-TV's 6 a.m. and noon newscasts. In addition, "Dental Health Check" segments are
now rebroadcast several times a day on the Texas Cable News Network.
"Dental Health Check" is available on BCD's Web site as well. Visit the site for scripts and information about the latest segments. Hosted by Dr. Linda Niessen (BCD), the report's recent topics include:
- "Bacteria Tests" featuring Dr. Mark Kogut (BCD '77, '79). Diet alone does not cause tooth decay. A new test can discover the hidden cause of frequent cavities in children.
- "Invisible Teen Braces" featuring Dr. Doug Crosby
(BCD '81). Teenage orthodontic patients now can straighten their teeth with invisible braces that use no metal wires or brackets. Patients must be responsible enough to wear the nearly invisible plastic trays, called aligners, 24 hours a day (taking them out to eat and brush their teeth).
- "Preeclampsia" featuring Dr. Ronald Stukalin (BCD '88, '90, '94). Pregnant women who suddenly develop high blood pressure may need to see their obstetrician and their dentist. New scientific evidence links chronic gum infection with high blood pressure in pregnant women. That condition, called preeclampsia, endangers the life of both the mother and the unborn baby.
- "Restylane Lips" featuring Dr. Kevin McBride. A new procedure to enhance a woman's lips is gaining popularity among some dental patients. Restylane, a plumping agent that has replaced the once popular collagen, fills
in lines and depressions around the lips.
