Children's Sealant Day attracts 95
Healthier smiles and a pleasant dental experience are the benefits for children who participated in Children's Sealant Day sponsored by the Asian-American Dental Society at Baylor College of Dentistry
March 29. Supported by the college's pediatric dentistry and public health sciences departments, the free program helped 95 children, 91 of whom received prophylaxis and/or sealants in addition to a dental exam.
Sealants were applied to 318 teeth.
The event was staffed by 52 dental students, many of whom are members of ADS or the Texas Association of Women Dentists-BCD Chapter. "Our students were efficient, enthusiastic and focused," said Dr.
Loulou Moore
(BCD '93, '94), assistant professor of restorative sciences and faculty adviser to ADS and TAWD. "It was a truly wonderful learning experience for all of us, and our young patients received important oral health education and valuable preventive care."
BCD students were supervised by Moore; Dr. George Cramer (BCD '75), clinical assistant professor of restorative sciences; Dr. Stephen Crane (BCD '73), clinical assistant professor of public
health sciences; Dr. Dan Hong, clinical assistant professor of restorative sciences; and Dr. Steve Karbowski, assistant professor of restorative sciences. Dr. Dana Ly (BCD '02) and
Dr. Simon Kolath (BCD '02), former ADS members, also worked with students in the clinic. Jackie Vo (D4), ADS parliamentary chair, coordinated the event.
Ultradent provided all sealant materials. Dr. W.R. DeBrucque
(BCD '57), dental director of Delta Dental Insurance Company, and Edwin Gonzales, educational consultant with South Texas Dental, donated gift-bag items to the children. Alison Crane, Crane's daughter, provided breakfast items. Dr. Phuong Nguyen, spouse of first-year dental student
Khoi Nguyen, assisted in the clinic and Dr. Son Tran sponsored lunch. BCD facilities services and security staff also supported the event.
