BCD students receive scholarships

Julie Harkins and Adrien Hodges, senior students at Baylor College of Dentistry's Caruth School of Dental Hygiene, each received a $750 scholarship from the Beta Chapter of Sigma Phi Alpha, a national dental hygiene honor society.  Jill Hawkins (BCD '96), dental hygienist in periodontics, made the presentation April 7.

Sigma Phi Alpha promotes and recognizes scholarship, service and character among dental hygiene students and professionals. Harkins and Hodges were the only two students to receive the Dallas chapter scholarship, which supports the education of dental hygiene students who demonstrate high professional standards.

"These scholarships recognize Julie's and Adrien's commitment to their education and to the dental hygiene profession," said Kathleen Muzzin, clinical associate professor of dental hygiene at BCD and Beta Chapter liaison. "Their dedication here at BCD has prepared them to be assets to the profession and the communities they will serve."

Shelli Minshew-Ryczek, a junior dental hygiene student, received a $1,000 scholarship from the BCD Women's Club. Carol Libby, administrative assistant I in periodontics and club president, presented the scholarship to Minshew-Ryczek during the group's May meeting.

"The Women's Club hosts several fund-raisers each year to earn the money for this scholarship," Libby said. "We are pleased that we can help Shelli reach her goal of becoming a dental hygienist."

The scholarship is given annually to either a junior dental hygiene student or a third-year dental student. Women's Club members donate time and supplies to the fund-raisers that include the Chili Cook-off, a sandwich sale and the Valentine's Day Bake Sale. For more information about the BCD Women's Club or the scholarship, contact Lori Dees, administrative assistant I in communications and development and club secretary, at Ext 8214.

Pamela Nicoara, a fourth-year dental student, is one of only five students nationwide to receive an American Academy of Periodontology Student Scholarship for $5,000. Awarded by the AAP Foundation, the scholarship was created to encourage outstanding dental students to consider a future in periodontics. Recipients must have been accepted to a postgraduate periodontal program; Nicoara will begin her three-year residency at the University of Washington Graduate Periodontics Program in June.

In the notification letter to Nicoara, Dr. Sebastian Ciancio, chair of the foundation's Student Scholarship Selection Committee, wrote: "Our committee was most impressed with not only your academic background, but also the career goals and passion for periodontics that you shared with us. We look forward to the future contributions you will make to the specialty of periodontics."
