Research Day

Student Research Group presents awards, hosts fund-raising auction

For the second year in a row, Baylor College of Dentistry's Student Research Group raised $8,000 during its annual Research Day and auction in April. Co-sponsored by the college's Office of Research and Advanced Education, the events recognized the research efforts of BCD's dental and dental hygiene students, graduate students and faculty. Research Day received additional support from the Baylor Oral Health Foundation, the American Association for Dental Research's Dallas section and participating vendors.

"Research Day was one of the best ever," said Dr. Robert Spears (BCD '02), assistant professor of biomedical sciences and SRG faculty adviser. "Without the generous support of Research Day and auction participants, student research and SRG activities would be much more difficult."

Keynote speaker Dr. Dominick DePaola, former BCD president and dean, was warmly received as he presented "Impact of the New Biology on the Future of Dental Medicine." He is director and CEO of the Forsyth Institute in Boston and professor of oral health policy and epidemiology at Harvard School of Medicine.

In addition to the invited speaker, Research Day featured poster and oral presentation formats as well as competitions for all students that included cash awards and plaques for winners. SRG, AADR's Dallas section and Caulk/Dentsply provided the cash awards. Vendors also were on hand to provide information about various dental products.
