Community Connection

Public health sciences department initiative serves Dallas area

Community Connections, an initiative of Baylor College of Dentistry's Department of Public Health Sciences, provided outreach programs and services in several Texas locations during the past month.

D3 students made Tooth Talk presentations to elementary school students in Garland and Dallas, preschool children in Mesquite, and teens in Fort Worth, McKinney and Rowlett. These students also worked with middle school and high school visitors to BCD in six Project Dental Awareness programs. By the Roots was presented to children at seven elementary schools in Grand Prairie, Irving, Lone Oak, Mansfield, Mesquite and Wylie.

D2, D3 and D4 students participated in 14 health fairs in Dallas and Mesquite and performed dental screenings for the entire student body of a McKinney elementary school during the last four weeks. Supervising dentists were Dr. Kent Boozer (BCD '00), pediatric dentistry resident; Dr. T.C. Lyon, professor emeritus of public health sciences; Dr. John Nelson, retired associate dean for clinical services and professor emeritus of diagnostic sciences; Dr. K. Vendrell Rankin (BCD '77), associate professor of public health sciences; and Dr. Kenny Thompson (BCD '00), pediatric dentistry resident.
