Student Research Group presents awards, raises record-breaking funds

Raenie Oakes took first place honors in the Dental Student Poster Presentations category. Congratulating her are her mentor, Robert Spears (left), and Dr. David Carlson, associate dean for research and advanced education and chair of biomedical sciences.

"We appreciate the tremendous response to Research Day and the auction," said Robert Spears, SRG faculty adviser and instructor in biomedical sciences. "Without the generous support of event participants, student research and SRG activities would be much more difficult."

For the first time in its history, Baylor College of Dentistry's Student Research Group raised $8,000 during its annual Research Day and auction in April. This marks a $2,000 increase over last year's proceeds.

Recognizing the research efforts of BCD's dental and dental hygiene students, graduate students and faculty, Research Day received additional support from the American Association for Dental Research's Dallas section and participating vendors.

From left: Kathleen Muzzin mentored Darla Heckathorn and Beth Ann Davis, whose research took first place in the Dental Hygiene Table Clinics category.

Research Day featured poster and oral presentation formats. Student winners received cash awards and plaques, which were provided by the Student Research Group and the AADR's Dallas section.

Dental hygiene judges were Dr. Celeste Abraham, clinical instructor in periodontics, Dr. Bob Hinton, associate professor of biomedical sciences, and Ann McCann, director of assessment in academic planning and development. Dental posters judges included Dr. Jason Griggs, assistant professor and director of the biomaterials science graduate program, and Dr. Dan Jones (BCD '89), professor and chair of public health sciences. Judges for graduate presentations were Dr. Paul Ezzo (BCD '93), research assistant professor in biomedical sciences, and Dr. Bob Hutchins, associate professor of biomedical sciences
