Rossouw to lead BCD's orthodontics department
Dr. P. Emile Rossouw, professor and clinic director in the Department of Orthodontics at Baylor College of Dentistry, has been named the department's chair effective March 1.
"When I was offered my previous position and I came here to meet the faculty and staff, who are great people, gifted in their own ways, I thought it would be tremendous to be part of such a team," Rossouw said. "Now I'm really excited and I feel honored that they have placed this confidence in me to lead them. I think being a leader of such a great team should be easy. These people are supportive and willing to help whenever it's needed."
Rossouw's primary goal is to continue to build on the program's success. "I would like to continue developing our program because orthodontics itself is evolving almost day by day," he said. "One of the goals would be to try and see how we can fit all of these developments, including new techniques and more clinical research, into the program's duration."
Rossouw said he wants to continue to make sure that basic science and clinical science are brought together to help orthodontists make better clinical decisions. He also would like to see orthodontics in an absolute state-of-the-art clinic at BCD.
"If we have a state-of-the-art facility, we will continue attracting scholars from other places and ensure that we are not just the best in the United States, but one of the best in the world," Rossouw said.
He said strengthening the alumni's involvement with the program is also a priority.
Rossouw joined the orthodontic faculty at BCD in 2002 and has been associated with academic and clinical orthodontics in various capacities for the last 20 years.
Prior to coming to BCD, he was director of the Burlington Growth and Research Centre at the University of Toronto, a position he held until January 2002. While in Toronto, he maintained a private orthodontic practice. Rossouw also served as head of the discipline of orthodontics at the University of Toronto and head of the orthodontics department at University of Stellenbosch in Stellenbosch, South Africa.
Rossouw earned a bachelor's degree in chemistry and physiology, a dental degree, an honors degree in children's dentistry, a master's degree in orthodontics and a doctorate in dental science all at University of Stellenbosch. He is also a fellow of the Royal College of Dentists of Canada and has been serving this college as an examiner for orthodontics.
His published works include the areas of clinical orthodontics, biomaterials, jaw growth and long-term stability. Rossouw has lectured extensively both nationally and internationally and has contributed to more than 100 publications. He is a member of many associations and societies and serves on the reviewing panels for various orthodontic and general dentistry journals.
A&M regents award emeritus title to Gage
Dr. Tommy W. Gage (BCD '61, '69), retired vice chair of oral and maxillofacial surgery/pharmacology and director of curriculum at Baylor College of Dentistry, was awarded "emeritus" designation Dec. 5 by The Texas A&M University System Board of Regents. Emeritus titles are conferred upon individuals who have made significant contributions to the system through "long and distinguished service in administration, teaching, research and/or service."
Gage joined the BCD faculty as associate professor and chairman of the Department of Pharmacology in June 1969. He was ultimately promoted to professor and awarded tenure by the college's board of trustees. In 1992, the department merged with the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery; Gage was instrumental in facilitating the merger and assumed the role of vice chair. In 2000, he reduced his time commitment to 50 percent and accepted the assignment of curriculum director for the college, implementing a major curriculum revision and conversion from the quarter to semester system. He retired May 31, 2002.
Gage received numerous accolades during his 33 years on the BCD faculty, both from students and colleagues at the college and from his peers on a national level. Among these are induction into the BCD Hall of Fame in 2000; selection as the Dallas County Dental Society Dentist of the Year in 2002; life membership in the Texas Dental Association; selection for membership in Omicron Kappa Upsilon, the national dental honor fraternity; fellowship in the American College of Dentists and the International College of Dentists; and numerous teaching awards from BCD students.
Gage served tirelessly on various committees for BCD and The Texas A&M University System Health Science Center, many of which he led as chair. His leadership skills and expertise as a dental educator were invaluable to the institution. He also served in a leadership role on several national committees including the pharmacology section for the National Board Examinations Committee.
Gage is the author of numerous publications, the most significant being a drug reference book for dentists, now in its 7th edition. This book has become a basic reference tool in dental schools and dental practices throughout the United States and has been translated into Japanese. He also was invited to write a chapter in an international pharmacology text that is now in its second edition.
BCD boasts "Best Dentists" in Dallas
Ten Baylor College of Dentistry faculty members were named "Best Dentists in Dallas" in the December issue of D Magazine.
The magazine distributed an exclusive survey to approximately 2,400 Dallas-area dentists asking them to name the best among their local peers in a number of dental specialties. A panel of dentists – representing a range of specialties and geographic areas – reviewed the final list to determine the top 121 dentists.
BCD faculty selected as the "best" include: Dr. Jesse T. Bullard, professor emeritus of restorative sciences; Dr. Rowan H. Buskin, assistant clinical professor of restorative sciences; Dr. Thomas Ding (BCD '99, '02), assistant professor of graduate prosthodontics; Dr. Frank L. Higginbottom (BCD '71), clinical associate professor of restorative sciences and oral and maxillofacial surgery/pharmacology; Dr. Amp W. Miller (BCD '73, '80), professor of restorative sciences and director of undergraduate dental curriculum in academic services; Dr. Stephen M. Parel, professor of OMS/P and director of the Center for Maxillofacial Prosthodontics; Dr. N. Sue Seale (BCD '70, '72, '79), Regents professor and chair of pediatric dentistry; Dr. Leif Stromberg, assistant professor in general dentistry; Dr. R. Gilbert Triplett, Regents professor and chair of OMS/P; and Dr. Ronald D. Woody, professor and director of graduate prosthodontics and director of dental implant curriculum.
Niessen wins top media award
Dr. Linda Niessen, clinical professor of restorative sciences at Baylor College of Dentistry, and television producer Sara Ivey were given the top media award from the Chicago Dental Society at the opening session of its annual midwinter convention on Feb. 19.
Niessen and Ivey received the 2004 Cushing Award, an honor given to media for raising awareness of oral health issues. They first teamed up in 1993 to produce "Dental Health Check," the nation's only weekly dental feature shot on location. "Dental Health Check" begins its 11th year this month.
Singleton wins AAO award
Dr. Douglas A. Singleton (BCD '03-Ortho), an orthodontist in Dallas, Ga., will receive the 2004 Milo Hellman Award from the American Association of Orthodontists during its annual meeting April 29-May 4 in Orlando, Fla. The award was given based on his research, "Craniofacial Growth in Growth Hormone Deficient Rats Following Growth Hormone Supplementation," which he will present at the meeting.
As the most prestigious research award given by the AAO each year, the Hellman Award recognizes excellence in research involving an original investigation of unusual significance and value to the art and science of orthodontics. Selection is based on intense international competition.
"In essence, Dr. Singleton's research and thesis was judged to be the best in this year's competition," said Dr. Richard Ceen, professor and former chair of orthodontics at BCD. "He will receive the award based on his research and thesis, which was completed in 2003 as partial fulfillment of the requirements for his master's degree in orthodontics at BCD."
Singleton's thesis committee was co-chaired by Dr. Robert Hinton, associate professor and acting chair of biomedical sciences, and Dr. Peter Buschang, professor and director of research in orthodontics. Committee members were Dr. Rolf Behrents, former chair of orthodontics, and Dr. Larry Bellinger, Regents professor of biomedical sciences.
Baylor Oral Health Foundation elects new board members
The Baylor Oral Health Foundation board of directors elected two new members, George W. Bramblett Jr. and Dr. Keith Thornton (BCD '69), at the board's meeting Feb. 20. The foundation is an independent, nonprofit corporation created in 1993 and chartered by the state of Texas to benefit Baylor College of Dentistry.
Bramblett will serve as chair, replacing Milton P. Levy Jr., chair emeritus of NCH Corp. Levy was awarded the title "honorable chairman emeritus" in recognition of his more than 20 years of service to the foundation and the college. He will continue to serve the board as an advisory director.
Bramblett, a partner in the Dallas law firm of Haynes & Boone, LLP, is a longtime Dallas business leader and advocate for BCD. He returns as chair after serving last year as advisory director. Bramblett served previously on the foundation's board for nine years with six of those years as vice chairman. Prior to that, he served as chair of the BCD board of trustees in the mid-1990s during one of the most important periods in the history of the college: the time of intense merger negotiations with state university seeking to affiliate with the then-private dental school. Bramblett received the college's highest honor when he was inducted into the BCD Hall of Fame in 2003 for his service as a member and officer of both the BCD board of trustees and the foundation's board of directors.
Thornton is a third-generation dentist practicing general dentistry in Dallas. Long interested in sleep disorders, he invented the Thornton Adjustable Positioner – a device to treat snoring and obstructive sleep apnea – in 1994. He also owns Airway Management Inc., a company that markets and distributes parts for the device and other creative sleep solutions. Thornton has more than 25 U.S. and foreign patents for appliances used in the treatment of sleep-disordered breathing, airway management during anesthesia and temporomandibular disorders. He is an internationally recognized guest lecturer and consultant on these topics as well.In addition to Bramblett and Thornton, four board members were re-elected to three-year terms: Richard M. Hart, retired trust banking executive with Bank One, Texas; V.J. Horgan, president of TXU Energy Trading; Terry Kelley, chair of the Dallas-Fort Worth region of Southwest Bank of Texas, N.A.; and Dr. Bettye M. Whiteaker (BCD '68, '70), a Dallas periodontist, who will serve the board as secretary. Dr. Robert V. Walker (BCD '47), retired chair of the division of oral surgery at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas, will continue in his role as vice chair of the board.
Other board members include: Joel Allison, president and chief executive officer of the Baylor Health Care System in Dallas; Dr. Phil Campbell (BCD '71, '73), an orthodontist in Huntsville, Texas; Dr. Gary R. Cook, president of Dallas Baptist University; Ruben E. Esquivel, vice president with UT Southwestern; Dale V. Kesler, retired managing partner of Arthur Andersen & Co; Dr. Charles T. Ku (BCD '74), a general practitioner in Lewisville, Texas; Fritzi Pikes, president of PrimeSource Food Service Equipment; Carol Seay, community leader; and Carl J. Thomsen, retired executive from Texas Instruments. Clara Hoffman, civic leader, serves with Levy as an advisory director.
The Baylor Oral Health Foundation's mission is to provide Baylor College of Dentistry with funds and support to sustain institutional preeminence through excellence in students, faculty, research and outreach. It does this by managing and raising private dollars for internationally recognized faculty, leading-edge research, academic programs and scholarships.
New awards debut at annual faculty retreat
Four new awards were announced during Baylor College of Dentistry's annual faculty retreat in January. Honors went to: Dr. Jason Griggs, assistant professor of biomaterials science, Basic Science Faculty Research Award, Dr. Lynne Opperman, assistant professor of biomedical sciences, Service Excellence Award; Dr. Raghunath Puttaiah, assistant professor of diagnostic sciences, Clinical Faculty Research Award; and Dr. Rosemarie Zartman (BCD '91), assistant professor of pediatric dentistry, Teacher Excellence Award.
Dr. Charles Berry (BCD '73), associate dean of academic services, thanked the BCD Faculty Development Committee chaired by Dr. Lavern Holyfield (BCD '77) for establishing a way to recognize faculty in the areas of teaching, research and service.
"These awards acknowledge and potentiate the continued diligent work of the faculty through a competitive selection process," Berry said. "I expect the faculty awards concept will grow and recognize the work of individuals excelling in these areas."
The Basic Science Faculty Research Award and the Clinical Faculty Research Award honor faculty members for their research activities. Eligible recipients are full-time faculty members who have been at BCD for a minimum of three years. Each recipient receives travel funds up to a maximum of $1,500 to support a trip to the research conference of their choosing.
The Service Excellence Award, open to any full-time faculty member, recognizes excellence in at least one of three areas of service: community outreach and public service, institutional service, or patient care/clinical activity. The recipient receives a one-time $1,000 grant.
The Teacher Excellence Award provides a $1,000 merit payment to the recipient's base salary and a one-time $1,000 grant that can be used to support the development of new teaching techniques and methods at BCD. The award is open to all full-time faculty members who have been employed at the college for at least three years. Recipients also are charged with the task of mentoring a junior faculty member in at least one of the areas of teaching, research or service.
"As one of the most recently proposed projects sponsored by the Faculty Development Committee, the faculty awards program serves as an expression of our appreciation for and recognition of faculty contributions to the successful preparation of our students," said Holyfield.
Dr. Robert Cederberg (BCD '79), associate professor of diagnostic sciences and former committee chair, was instrumental in drafting the initial faculty award concept that was approved by the Administrative Council and Dr. James Cole (BCD '75), BCD dean, in 2002. Dr. Martha Alvarez, assistant professor of pediatric dentistry and chair of the awards subcommittee, led the initiative to select the 2004 recipients.
Okabe appointed first U.S. member of Japanese society
Dr. Toru Okabe, Regents Professor and chair of biomaterials science, was appointed to the board of the Society for Titanium Alloys in Dentistry in October. His two-year term begins in April. Okabe is the first person from the United States to become a board member.
The society meets annually in Japan for a board meeting and scientific presentation session. The group was formed to promote research on titanium and titanium alloys for dental applications. Okabe said that titanium research is much more active in Japan than in the United States. He believes his appointment may be an indicator of increasing research activity in this country.

BCD teams with others for Texas Mission of Mercy two-day event
Baylor College of Dentistry partnered with Texas Dentists for Healthy Smiles, the Texas Dental Association and the Dallas County Dental Society to provide dental care during the Texas Mission of Mercy event Feb. 20-21 at The Science Place in Dallas' Fair Park.
TMOM brings restorative dental care to underserved areas of Texas. Hundreds of dental professionals and other volunteers from across the state converge for several days at the TMOM-designated site to donate their professional services. Their goal is to relieve immediate pain and restore smiles at no cost to those who could not otherwise afford it. In past years, more than 1,000 patients have received treatment during the two-day events.
Adults were the primary recipients of care on Feb. 20. On Feb. 21, the event was linked with the American Dental Association's national "Give Kids a Smile" campaign. All care was provided free of charge.
"In just 15 hours of clinic time, we delivered almost $150,000 in donated dental care to 544 patients," said Dr. Dan Jones (BCD '89), professor and chair of public health sciences. "This event offered an opportunity for BCD to partner with our colleagues in local and state dental associations to provide much-needed care for the people of our community. We were proud to participate because the combined resources of these groups make it possible to do more than any of us could alone."
There were four stations set up at The Science Place, beginning with registration where patients' medical histories were taken. Next, patients went to the triage area where their oral health needs were assessed, treatment plans developed and necessary X-rays taken. Then they were taken to the patient waiting area and proceeded to the treatment area where dentists provided necessary care in one of the 28 operatories.
Volunteers included DCDS members and members of the practicing dental community who provided care both days. The entire BCD pediatric dentistry department was on hand to provide care during the Feb. 21 event. Many other BCD faculty, staff and students in all dental and dental hygiene classes participated as well. The college's information technology services department set up the electronic patient record system, and the Office of Social Services contacted patients for appointments.
Williams Lectureship sets attendance record
More than 100 dental and medical specialists from Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana and Oklahoma gathered to learn the latest information in sleep apnea management during the 6th Annual Dr. Phillip Earle Williams Lectureship in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Jan. 24. This marked the largest number of participants in the history of the event, which was held in Baylor University Medical Center's Beasley Auditorium.
Dr. B.D.Tiner, a nationally recognized oral and maxillofacial surgeon from San Antonio, was the featured speaker. Considered one of the country's leaders in this field, he presented "Advances in Diagnosis and Treatment of Obstructive Sleep Apnea." He was given the lectureship plaque, which featured a gold bas relief reproduction of the state of Texas on black velvet.
The lectureship is sponsored by Baylor College of Dentistry and hosted by the college's Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery/Pharmacology. This annual continuing education event for oral and maxillofacial surgeons is held free of charge each year in Williams' memory. The Walter Lorenz Surgical Company and 3i Implant Systems provided corporate support.
Plans for the 7th annual event in 2005 are now being formulated. For more information about the Williams Lectureship or to place a name on the event's mailing list, contact BCD's OMS/P department by calling Ext 8981 or by mail: P.E. Williams Lectureship; Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery/Pharmacology; Baylor College of Dentistry; P.O. Box 660677; Dallas, Texas 75266-0677.

Research day set for April 7
Dr. Sharon Gordon is the keynote speaker for Baylor College of Dentistry's annual Research Day April 7. She is director of the Office of Education at the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research/National Institutes of Health.
Set for 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the sixth floor lobby, Room 604 and Room 605, the program is co-sponsored by the BCD Student Research Group and the Office of Research and Advanced Education. It receives additional support from the Baylor Oral Health Foundation, the American Association for Dental Research's Dallas section and participating vendors.
In addition to the invited speaker, Research Day features poster and oral presentation formats as well as competitions for all students that include cash awards for winners. Vendors will be on hand to provide information about various dental products. Additionally, participants can earn up to five hours of lecture/demonstration continuing education credit.
"Research Day is a great opportunity to learn more about some of the research taking place at the college," said Dr. Robert D. Spears (BCD '02), SRG faculty adviser and assistant professor of biomedical sciences. "It recognizes the research efforts of BCD's dental and dental hygiene students, graduate students and faculty."
Awards will be presented in the following student competitions: first- and second-place dental hygiene table clinic; first- through fourth-place dental student presentation; and first-place graduate student in two categories (basic science and clinical science). SRG, AADR's Dallas section and Caulk/Dentsply provide the cash awards.
A schedule of events was sent via e-mail Feb. 9. For more information, contact Spears at Ext 8297 or rspears@bcd.tamhsc.edu.
Student Research Group sponsors annual auction April 15
Baylor College of Dentistry's Student Research Group has made April 15 a little less taxing this year. That's when the group will host its sixth annual auction at noon in the sixth floor lobby. The silent auction begins in the B-level atrium April 13 from noon to 1 p.m., continues at the same time April 14, then concludes April 15 along with the live auction on the sixth floor.
The auction serves as SRG's major fund-raising event of the year. "Last year, the group earned more than $7,000 with the auction," said Dr. Robert Spears (BCD '02), SRG faculty adviser and assistant professor of biomedical sciences. "The money is used to finance student travel to various research meetings and to provide financial support for student research and academic activities such as Student Research Day.
"We appreciate and need continued support from everyone at BCD," he continued.
SRG auction items are donated by faculty, staff, students and vendors. Deadline for donations is April 5. To donate items or for more information about the auction, contact Spears at Ext 8297 or rspears@bcd.tamhsc.edu.
Welcoming Diversity Committee sponsors speaker, photo contest
Celebrating diversity is a tradition at Baylor College of Dentistry, and the Welcoming Diversity Committee is planning a major event for March 31. Fred J. Kleisner, chair of the board and chief executive officer of Wyndham International, will present "The Wyndham Initiative" at noon in Room 605.
Kleisner will discuss how his company's diversity initiative has affected the corporation's internal community and its position in the marketplace. Following his presentation, winners of BCD's "Journey to Awareness" photo contest will be announced (see rules below).
"I am committed to creating a culture that fosters an inclusive environment where all employees are valued and respected for their individuality, and where these employees can create possibilities not only for the company, but for themselves as well," Kleisner said.
Under Kleisner's leadership, Wyndham International recently was named to Fortune magazine's Companies for Minorities for creating a diverse workforce of talented employees. New opportunities for minority-owned businesses have been provided and Fortune praised Wyndham for "top honors in purchasing" for tripling business with minority vendors. Savoy Magazine, one of the largest African-American-owned publications, recognized Wyndham for its excellence in diversity, making it the first hotel company to be chosen for this distinction.
"Journey to Awareness" Photo Contest Rules
Submissions to BCD's "Journey to Awareness" photo contest should fit the theme and be titled appropriately. Deadline for submissions is March 17 in Room 204. First-, second- and third-place winners will be announced following Kleisner's presentation, and all photographs will be displayed.
Welcoming Diversity Committee members will judge the photos, and judging will be blind. For more information about the photo contest, contact Darla Benson, educational program coordinator in student development, at Ext 8108 or stop by Room 204.
- Submit a maximum of three non-returnable photographs to Benson in Room 204.
- Label each photo with a short title, your name, telephone number and department. Write with pencil very lightly or use a prewritten label so that the writing does not make an impression on the photo.
- Photos from previous contests are ineligible.
- Submissions should be original, unedited photos that are no larger than 8x10.
- Prizes of $50, $30 and $20 in North Park Dollars will be awarded for first, second and third place, respectively. No contestant will be eligible for more than one prize.
