Asian-American Dental Society members served up smiles and delicious food during the group's annual Lunar New Year Lunch.

Baylor College of Dentistry's Asian-American Dental Society celebrated the Chinese new year by hosting a Lunar New Year Lunch on Feb. 8. Nearly 200 BCD faculty, staff and students enjoyed the celebration.

Organized by Doan Bui (D2), ADS historian, and co-social chairs Ashley Nguyen (D1) and Suzanne Nguyen (D2), the third annual project was not a fund-raiser as it has been in the past. "It was a purely social event for ADS members to share a bit of our culture with everyone at the college," said Jackie Vo (D3), ADS president. "Everyone loved the food and seemed to have a really good time."

Chinese New Year is an important celebration all over the world; similar celebrations in Japan, Korea and Vietnam are known as the Lunar New Year or Spring Festival. The date changes from year to year, but it's always in January or February. The date is based on an emperor's almanac, which uses the first day of the first month of the lunar year as the start of the Chinese new year. The lunar year is named in honor of one of 12 animals and is part of a 12-year cycle.

During new year celebrations, people are not unkind or combative because it is believed to bring a bad, unlucky year. Symbolism surrounds the foods and customs associated with the holiday, and everyone celebrates their birthdays on this day as well.
