The biennial seminar is a requirement for third- and fourth-year dental students. Conducted by a team of practice management experts, it
is geared to meet the concerns and needs of dental students who are planning to enter private practice in the near future. This educational seminar is designed to complement BCD's existing practice
management courses. "Both are part of BCD's commitment to our students to be lifelong colleagues," said Dr. D. William Harman,
associate dean for student and alumni services. "We want them to have successful careers in dentistry."
Dr. Fred E. Aurbach (BCD '73), a general dentist in Dallas, and
Dr. Thomas C. Harrison
(BCD '79), a general dentist in Katy, Texas, were featured speakers. They discussed life after dental school, associateships, dental teams, dental prepayment and managed care, purchasing a practice, managing money and practice financing, and marketing for new dentists.
"The seminar provides useful information, but the speakers have the most impact on the students," Harman said. "This year, they were fortunate to hear from two BCD alumni who are leaders in the
profession. It hits home because the speakers attended BCD and now enjoy successful practices."
The speakers weren't the only alumni committed to the students that day. The BCD Alumni Association
provided lunch to seminar participants.
"The students' interaction with alumni helped them see beyond BCD – that indeed, there is life after dental school," Harman said. "They also see that life
after dental school includes a commitment to the education of future colleagues."
