BCD Employee Profile
Kay Duckworth

Kay Duckworth, administrative coordinator in the Office of Research and Advanced Education, can't stay away from Baylor College of Dentistry. Now in her third "tour of duty," she has been with the college for a total of 17 years. Her service, professionalism, dedication and friendship were lauded when she was selected Staff Employee of the Quarter for the first quarter of 2003.

Duckworth and her husband, Loyd, have a daughter, April, and a son, Mark. They have three grandchildren: Logan, 5; Clayton, 2; and Erin, 1.

Hometown: Forney, Texas

Place I'd like to live/retire: Maui in winter; Texas in spring; Monterrey Bay in summer; Colorado in fall.

Role models: I've never found all the traits I admire most wrapped up in one package. The people who have made a difference in my life are not the ones with the most credentials, the most money or the most awards – they are the ones who care.

Personal motto: Consider the turtle: He makes progress only when he sticks his neck out.

Best thing about my job: There's a new puzzle to solve almost every day.

Best thing about BCD: I've enjoyed the people I've known and worked with; some have become very close friends.

Career highlight: Retiring four associate deans.

If I wasn't at BCD, I'd …: I don't know yet – that's why I'm here.

Life philosophy: I learned that people will forget what you said and people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.

Pet peeves: Speed bumps, clutter and being late (if I'm late, I've failed).

Favorite vacation destination: Rome – the history overwhelms me, and they say it's "eternal."

Dream car: I've never really been into cars.

Favorite hobby: I don't think of reading as a hobby, but it's the only leisurely activity I do incessantly. Otherwise, I pretty much mix up my activities so I don't get bored. This month it's bicycling.

Word that best describes me: Simple.

Something you might not know about me: I played second base on a traveling American Softball Association-sanctioned women's softball team in the '70s and '80s.

Top three passions: Logan, Clay and Erin – I love kids!

What my colleagues say about me: "I don't know what I would have done without Kay's assistance over the last two years with the BMS graduate program," said Nancy Anthony, administrative assistant in biomedical sciences. "Kay is very knowledgeable and always has the answers, or she can direct you to the right person who has the answer. She is a good friend and is always willing to help, giving support when needed – as well as a ride to work! I dread the day she retires 'again.'"

Nancy Duggan, administrative assistant in research and advanced education, agrees. "Kay is a very dedicated and committed employee at BCD. She is very knowledgeable in her field and knows how to handle people in a professional manner," Duggan said. "Kay definitely is someone you can look up to and learn from within and outside the workplace. She is an excellent listener when you need someone to talk to and will give advice when needed. It is a privilege and a blessing to work with such a wonderful person."

Janea Woosley, continuing education associate in continuing education, added to Duckworth's accolades. "Kay is absolutely wonderful!" she said. "Over the years, we have enjoyed sharing travel adventures, grandchildren stories, and how to solve world problems during the renowned 'One O'Clock Lunch Bunch.' Kay is a very genuine and caring friend and co-worker. Her dedication and polished professionalism set a high standard and an excellent example."
