Dr. Larry Bellinger made three presentations during the Experimental Biology 2002 meeting, which was held April 20-24 in New Orleans. He was co-chair of the scientific session titled "Food Intake and Body Fat: Some Central and Autonomic Controls."
Bellinger was invited to speak on "Effect of I.C.V. Infusion of the a-MSH
Agonist MTII on Meal Patterns in Rats Following Nicotine Withdrawal." He also made a poster presentation with the same title.Dr. Lynne A. Opperman also was involved in the Experimental Biology meeting. She organized
and chaired a symposium titled "Getting A Head: Molecular Regulation of Craniofacial Bone Growth." She also presented "Molecular Pathways in Cranial Suture Morphogenesis." Joseph Rawlins (D2), a D.D.S./Ph.D. program

Clinical Services Rob Grant, Dr. Thomas K. Hasegawa Jr. and the Axium Review/Implementation Team hosted Dr. Patrick Ferrillo,
dean of Southern Illinois University School of Dental Medicine, and SIU's Clinic Management System Review Team April 29-30. The SIU team was interested in
BCD's experiences with Axium. During their visit, the team toured BCD, learned about patient admissions and record processing, met with specific interest groups and practiced using the Axium system in the college's

Dr. Carlos A. Morales-Ryan lectured and gave case presentations at the Mexican College of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons of Nuevo Leon in Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, Mexico April 3. His topic was "Evaluation, Diagnosis, Treatment Planning and Surgical Outcomes: A Discussion of Case Presentations.
Dr. Stephen M. Parel conducted two continuing education courses at BCD Feb. 8-9. The subjects were the Zygoma implant and immediate loading. Both courses
involved live surgery performed by Drs. R. Gilbert Triplett and Sterling R. Schow, which was filmed by Scott Frederick of media resources.On March 1-2, Parel presented "Immediate Loading" at the Novum Seminar in
Göteborg, Sweden. "Procera Custome Solutions and Innovations" was his topic at the 17th
Annual Academy of Osseointegration Conference in Dallas March 14. On March 15, Parel moderated a session on "Implants in Adolescence – An Interdisciplinary Challenge." Other News:
Nine dental students completed the American Heart Association Basic Life Support Instructor Course at Baylor College of Dentistry April 12-13. Dr. Roger Alexander conducted the 16-hour course, which certifies BLS instructors.
Jesse Arbaugh, David Ciesla and Mojan Esmailli Safavi are now fourth-year dental students. The remaining students graduated from BCD in May. Orthodontics Presentation: Dr. Richard Ceen presented "Design and Construction of an Immediate Deprogramming Splint" to the 102nd

Drs. Farhad Eslamboltchi, Bill Hallmon and Francisco Rivero-Hidalgo presented an interdisciplinary seminar in periodontics at the Universidad Quetzalcoatl Irapuato in Irapuato, Mexico, April 10-12. The audience included private practitioners, faculty, residents and dental students.
Eslamboltchi presented "Implantology" and Hallmon spoke on "Periodontal Plastic Surgery: Past, Present and Future." Rivera-Hidalgo presented a one-hour course
on "Peridontal Disease and Systemic Disease" and two 30-minute programs on "Infection Control" and "Latex Allergy." He also presented a three-hour course on "Stomatology: Diseases and Treatment, Xerostomia, Herpes Virus

Restorative Sciences Drs. Stanton Cobb, Maiara
Hister and Loulou Moore attended Ultradent's Key Educator Conference April 4-7 in Salt Lake City, which attracted 125 doctors from 14 nations. The conference covered many of the restorative sciences. On May 3, Cobb was a guest of the Texas Physicians Resource Council during its ethics meeting in Dallas. The program featured Dr. John Patrick, professor of biochemistry and
pediatrics at the University of Ottawa in Canada, who presented "Ethics and Medicine for the New Millennium." |
