Baylor College of Dentistry honors 160 graduates

Baylor College of Dentistry honored 160 graduates and recognized numerous award recipients during its Commencement Ceremony May 23 at the Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center.

Dr. David Sibley (BCD '74, '76) was the keynote speaker and Dr. Nancy Dickey, president of The Texas A&M University System Health Science Center, conferred degrees. Dr. James Cole (BCD '75), BCD dean, presented the "Dean's Charge to the Graduates" at the ceremony's conclusion. See "Dean makes comments" below for his remarks.

BCD awarded 78 dental degrees, 29 bachelor's degrees in dental hygiene from the college's Caruth School of Dental Hygiene, 27 certificates in dentistry, one fellowship in cosmetic and implant dentistry, three master's degrees, and eight M.S. degrees and certificates in dentistry. One M.S. degree and three doctorate degrees were awarded to BCD students by the HSC's Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences.

Additionally, 10 BCD students were recognized for degrees earned since graduation last year. Of these, BCD awarded seven M.S. degrees and certificates in dentistry, GSBS awarded one doctorate degree, and the Texas Tech Health Sciences Center School of Medicine awarded two medical degrees.

Top dental and dental hygiene honors were announced during the ceremony. Dental honors were presented to Dr. Russell Warren (BCD '02), gold medal; Dr. Sanjay Parekh (BCD '02), second scholastic honors; Dr. Tien Nguyen (BCD '02), third scholastic honors; and Dr. James Carrell Jr. (BCD '02), fourth scholastic honors. Warren also received the Alpha Omega Scholastic Award. Dental hygiene honors went to Lisha Edwards (BCD '02-DHyg), gold medal; Laurinda McCullough (BCD '02-DHyg), second scholastic honors; and Lisa Dowst (BCD '02-DHyg), third scholastic honors.

The BCD Alumni Association's Dental and Dental Hygiene Teachers of the Year carried BCD's ceremonial mace during the commencement processional and recessional. Dr. David Grogan (BCD '81, '86), assistant professor of oral and maxillofacial surgery/pharmacology, was the dental honoree. Glenna Johns (BCD '65, '77, '99), clinical assistant professor of dental hygiene, was the dental hygiene honoree.

Grogan, Johns and the recipients of 57 clinical awards were first recognized during the Alumni Recognition Gala May 22 at Adam's Mark Hotel in Dallas. In addition, the Distinguished Alumnus and Hall of Fame awards were presented.

Distinguished alumni included Cole and Dr. Robert Anderton (BCD '61), immediate past president of the American Dental Association. Hall of Fame recipients included Dr. Phillip Campbell (BCD '71, '73), longtime advocate for BCD and the Baylor Oral Health Foundation, and Dr. Laurette Lipson (BCD '93-Honorary D.D.S.), associate dean emeritus of BCD.
