On Air

In the News graphicBaylor College of Dentistry's nationally syndicated television oral health news report, "Dental Health Check," airs locally each Monday during WFAA-TV's 6 a.m. and noon newscasts. In addition, "Dental Health Check" segments are now rebroadcast several times a day on the Texas Cable News Network.

"Dental Health Check" is available on BCD's Web site as well. Visit the site for scripts and information about the latest segments. Hosted by Dr. Linda Niessen (BCD), the report's recent topics include:

  • "Diagnodent" featuring Dr. Kent Smith. Dentists are using a new laser to detect and monitor cavities. It measures the amount of enamel and dentin lost and assigns a number using a special scale. The number helps the dentist decide if the tooth needs a filling or if it should just be checked again in several months.

  • "Sleep Disorder" featuring Dr. Steven Bender (BCD '86). Could grinding your teeth at night be a serious sleep disorder? Some researchers and dentists say yes.

  • "Twice a Year" featuring Dr. T. Bob Davis. Do you really need to see a dentist twice a year? There is no doubt that regular visits help maintain healthy teeth and gums, but the twice-yearly recommendation is one size that does not fit all patients.

  • "Commuter Clenching" featuring Davis. Dentists are noticing an increased occurrence of commuter clenching. Stressful commutes are causing dental trauma that can be avoided with a simple mouthguard.

  • "Toddler Cavities" featuring Dr. Carolyn Wilson (BCD and BCD '77). Even if you faithfully brush your toddler's teeth, giving your child a bottle of milk or juice at bedtime could drastically increase the chance of a cavity that can be quite complicated to treat.
