Short-term Training Program began June 2
Thirty dental students are participating in Baylor College of Dentistry's
Short-term Training Program, which began June 2. Four of the students will begin their dental studies at BCD in August.
This mentored summer research program supports student research principally during the summer months when incoming first-year and second-year dental students have more time to
devote to research; the projects often continue throughout the year. Supported by a National Institutes of Health training grant, BCD intramural research funds and the Baylor Oral Health Foundation, the
program gives students research experience that helps strengthen them academically whether they pursue a career in research, academics or private practice.
All students are required to attend "Responsible Conduct in Research," a weekly course through which one-hour selective credit is awarded.
Students also prepare to present their research findings at the college's annual Research Day as well as at state, national and international research competitions and professional meetings such as the International
Association for Dental Research/American Association for Dental Research, the American Dental Association, the Texas Dental Association and the Hinman National Student Research Symposium.
"Baylor College of Dentistry fosters a rich academic environment for student research," said Dr. David S. Carlson, Regents professor, chair
of biomedical sciences and associate dean for research and advanced education. "BCD's Short-term Training Program is one example of the college's commitment to students."
