An honorary organization for the recognition of outstanding and meritorious service to the profession, ICD presented the fellowship to Seale for
"conspicuous service rendered in the art and science of dentistry." 2001 was a momentous year for Seale, who was named Pediatric Dentist of the Year by the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry last May.Dr. Linda C. Niessen,
professor of public health sciences and vice president of clinical education for Dentsply International, was the keynote speaker during the American College of Dentists' meeting. Her speech, "Oral Health and Social Justice: Leadership Opportunities for Dentistry," followed the induction of the organization's 238 new fellows, including five BCD faculty members.
Founded in 1920, the American College of Dentists recognizes dentists who have made significant contributions to the advancement of dentistry and promotes excellence, ethics and professionalism
in dentistry. Awarded by invitation only, ACD fellowship is based on demonstrated leadership and contributions to the dental profession and society.
The 2001 BCD inductees included Dr. Byron W. Benson,
professor of oral and maxillofacial radiology in diagnostic sciences; Dr. Janice P. DeWald (BCD '95), professor and director of BCD's Caruth School of Dental Hygiene; Dr. David Kerns,
director of postdoctoral periodontics; Dr. L. Kay Mash, associate professor of restorative sciences; and Dr. P. Wayne Woods (BCD '88), associate professor of restorative sciences.
Ceremonial personnel included Dr. William H. Binnie,
Regents professor and chair of diagnostic sciences and interim vice president for The Texas A&M University System Health Science Center, who was the ACD flag bearer. Dr. Thomas K. Hasegawa Jr.,
associate dean for clinical services, served as an usher.
